I think it definitely depends on what fandom you find yourself in, and what people you choose to associate with, anon.

My experience in a large fandom on there was...not great. I had some lovely friends, and we had fun, but there was a lot of drama and arguing and yes, shallow gifs and not that much discussion.

But now that I've moved to a fandom that's much smaller in all, and the Tumblr segment is very small indeed, I have so much more fun. We all know each other, and it's like a community. I've made excellent friends that I'm even going on a trip with some later this year! So it definitely varies, because we have much more in the way of fanworks and discussion than in my previous large fandom.
