I sort of agree, but I'm on there now mostly because it's a convenient place for pics and fanart.

I figure if I hang on long enough, it'll be replaced by something else. Hopefully something better.

Speak for yourself OP, Tumblr is a life line my fandom needs.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm, I needed to get away from certain aspects of fandom for a while. My new fandom has a calm and relaxed Tumblr presence, mostly pictures, and not a lot of infighting, etc. I'm very happy with it at the moment, as long as i don't let it eat up too many hours of the day. :)

Sometimes pictures are far more RELAXING than people having debates, you know?

I think tumblr experience can vary. But it's almost guaranteed that someday, it will become the next LJ. Things change. It happens!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like right now is tumblr's peak. The lack of staff involvement, improvements, and privacy will will eventually make everything tumble down and move to the next platform.

I agree to a point, but I think that actually IS what fandom is now. I miss fandom when it was everything you said too, but we're in an age where people reblog and retweet and "like", not have lengthy discussions. You have to look hard for those places.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. There are so many issues specific to Tumblr, because Tumblr as a platform only allows one-way soap-boxing and has no idea what a community is (sigh). I've written so much on why Tumblr as a platform just sucks (it's almost too easy, really).

I very much like discussions and debate, and I don't think Tumblr lends itself well to that at all. But I can see how people might enjoy the rapid content generation and sharing pretty things over wordy discussions and debate, so I guess YMMV. But speaking for myself, yep, I'm waiting/hoping for Tumblr to come crashing down. I hope it's just a matter of time.

I don't think we'll be able to go back to LJ. It was one of the best ones, imo, and the amount of sharing and fangirling was much more broad, while on tumblr, you just follow random people without even having to talk to them. And most of the time, they won't give two shits about you or won't follow back/communicate.

I agree it's lonely. And it's sad because basically everyone there cares about the amount of notes they get for their work and how popular it is. It's pathetic, and I've only joined it because I thought I might as well just be lonely in fandom and look at pretty things than be lonely and do nothing.

[personal profile] tcex28 2014-07-01 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Sort of yeah.

The unsuitedness of the site for actual discussion and comment troubles me. Someone can post some stupid shit that 'looks' legit and everyone will just go reblog reblog reblog while any dissenting voices go practically unheard...except to anyone already following the dissenter. An infinity of echo chambers.
Or people can passive-aggressively dump something in a tag (oh lord, I want to go back in time and destroy the very idea of "a tag for classification becoming equivalent with an actual fandom space" before it can ever be birthed)

You get good content here and there, but there's little to no sense of community outside your personal sycophantsphere. Which might be good in some cases, but it just seems so unhealthy for it to have the amount of sway it does in fandom. It's like it's constructed to incubate small-mindedness and petty shit.

I think it definitely depends on what fandom you find yourself in, and what people you choose to associate with, anon.

My experience in a large fandom on there was...not great. I had some lovely friends, and we had fun, but there was a lot of drama and arguing and yes, shallow gifs and not that much discussion.

But now that I've moved to a fandom that's much smaller in all, and the Tumblr segment is very small indeed, I have so much more fun. We all know each other, and it's like a community. I've made excellent friends that I'm even going on a trip with some later this year! So it definitely varies, because we have much more in the way of fanworks and discussion than in my previous large fandom.

Tumblr isn't meant to have deep meaningful discussions. It's not a discussion platform. It was never meant to be a discussion platform. It is a sharing platform. It's for saying, "Hey, look at this. Isn't it neat? Pass it on." Not, "Hey, look at this. What do you think of it? And how do you think it reflects modern society?"

I really wish people would stop being stubborn and realize this. It's like complaining about how twitter doesn't let you write essays of information. That's not the point of the platform.

Sometimes it makes critical conversation impossible

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
One thing I absolutely despise about Tumblr is that, although it's great for sharing art and fan fiction, there is absolutely ZERO way to write any in-depth criticism of one's fandom without getting dog piled. I say this because a few days ago, I saw a great Tumblr user I follow write a post on Uhura and basically get called a racist because of it. All she said was that a problem in new rebooted Trek is that although Uhura has been made part of the new group of three, she wasn't given McCoy's humanism and didn't get her own independent plot line.

This poor user was absolutely torn to shreds by some other users on the site. They completely misrepresented her statements and accused her of attacking Uhura because she "gets in the way of" Spirk.

And it's ridiculous because a ten-second google search of that person's site revealed that there is absolutely zero Spirk on it. She doesn't ship it and she said as much. But because she wanted Uhura to get an expanded role, suddenly she's being portrayed as a "white fangirl" who is using "white feminism" to shit on black fans. It honestly makes discussion impossible because as soon as you tag anything with Uhura, these assholes come down and start screaming at you and accusing you of being a bigot.

Just to note, it's by no means all Uhura or Spuhura fans -- but there's a contingent that is so fucking aggressive that they'll take any criticism of the films and find a way to spin it into a personal attack.

Not this again. *yawn*

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think tumblr needs to full on die but I do wish it was just a subset of fandom and not where everyone ran to when lj started to die. It's fine for sharing fanart, and gifs and silly things, but for discussion it's the worst.

Others have already brought up the lack of back and forth and the dog piling, and I also have to add that misinformation gets spread SO EASILY around tumblr. And since you won't always see corrected reblogs (unless you follow the person who corrected it) people will continue to spread around misinformation for a long time after the issue should have been resolved.

Fandom has always been wanky and dumb but sites like tumblr and twitter and pininterest just tends to bring it out full force.

Oh I completely agree. Tumblr is shit. But I still use it to get some nice fandom content like fanart or fanfic links. If you don't use it for any more than that, then it's fine. But if you get into the wank and drama and SJW bullshit everywhere, then you're going to have a bad time.

I've stopped posting personal stuff on my blog (or at least to a very minimum) and just mostly reblog stuff. I've never been happier.

[personal profile] esteefee 2014-07-02 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
It reminds me of billboards on a freeway. And about as socially engaging. But it's prettier scenery, at least, so I don't have bad feelings about it.

I do wish there were a forum like tumblr (with the ease of posting media) that was siloed on communities, where people could gather and discuss things, though. Someday maybe a bunch of us will kickstart a project to build it. I'd quit my job to work on that.
