Tumblr isn't meant to have deep meaningful discussions. It's not a discussion platform. It was never meant to be a discussion platform. It is a sharing platform. It's for saying, "Hey, look at this. Isn't it neat? Pass it on." Not, "Hey, look at this. What do you think of it? And how do you think it reflects modern society?"

I really wish people would stop being stubborn and realize this. It's like complaining about how twitter doesn't let you write essays of information. That's not the point of the platform.

That's a fair point, but I do think it's frustrating because Tumblr is basically the only space where a lot of fandoms congregate so it's not like there's a good alternative in many cases. Alternatively, it's also sometimes the only place female fans can go where they're the majority (at least in some of my fandoms).

This. This needs reiterating

And then you have me, the female fan who stubbornly returns to reddit time after time because there my fandom has an active discussion-based community, only to be continuously exhausted and disgusted by the amount of ingrained sexism in the average reddit user.

I keep going back, keep fighting it. :\

What fandom?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
One Piece.

I also go to reddit for the hockey fandom, but that community is actually populated by inclusive and mature individuals. Never had a problem there.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch.

There's not any decent community for One Piece?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

It's hard finding one for the anime community in general, really.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Eh... maybe I am just bad at finding the nice communities. There are a ton of forums but most of them have a really unfortunate obsession with power levels and boobs. Maybe it's the demographics of the English-speaking fandom (teenage boys?), who knows.

And the community at reddit is all right, good things do come out of it. It's just that sometimes things like this happen instead: http://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/28svxo/can_we_get_over_how_oda_depicts_women_already/

Yeah, this. It's not that people are being stubborn about it. It's that conversations are a fun part of fandom, and there's not really anywhere active to have those anymore.

I miss the idea of just saying nice things about people's fanworks. Reblogs are swell, and good for exposure, but I feel like I'm doing something wrong if I write something about the thing under a reblog.

tell me about it. fucking shitbrains on tumblr get so fuckin touchy when you comment on their content in any way that's not brainlessly and exclusively positive

I think we've got sort of a chicken and egg thing going here. Is Tumblr popular because people wanted the sort of interaction it provides or did people who aren't as naturally inclined to that sort of interaction adapt to it because it got popular?

Either way, I think it's fair for people who want a different sort of interaction to complain about how hard it is to find these days. It may not be Tumblr's fault but I can understand how people feel bitter toward it and its popularity.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Most of its fandom migration came from dA and LJ when both of those platforms had mahor issues that were unappealing, so my guess is that it became popular because it was a better alternative at the time to some people and everyone else jumped ship because the other platforms were dying.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure most of us who like discussion realize that - and, out of the people I've talked to about this - we're not trying to make tumblr that. It's painfully obvious that it was just intended to share content, not comment on it.

That said, why *shouldn't* we be allowed to be frustrated that tumblr makesit hard when it's where fandom's main hub is for the forseeable future? Particularly since other places to find fandom either have a very small community, or have other restrictions that seriously limit conversation in most fandoms? With Twitter you can at least post a link to an essay and have a decent chance of getting a response. You can't do that with conversation on Tumblr.

You're right about the purpose of tumblr, but I think part of why people are so frustrated that that tumblr has pretty much become the ONLY fandom space, especially for more recent fandoms. A common place where people can congregate and just have discussions no longer exists (well, LJ and DW obviously physically EXIST still, but in an abstract sense, there's nothing because many people no longer use those spaces).

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe people shouldn't write their shitty opinions on tumblr then?

Your idea of tumblr would work if there weren't fucking text posts.
