For really big fandoms, sure, Tumblr is a lot of pointless noise and not a lot of thoughtful discussion. I tend to stay away from those, mostly because I don't like them (Supernatural and Sherlock can go jump off a cliff for all I care). But for the smaller fandoms I spend most of my time in--fandoms that I thought were pretty much dead until joining Tumblr--it's fantastic. I've been able to connect with more people in those particular fandoms, made more friends, and also been able to better share my creative works than I'd otherwise been able to, and it's kept my interest in those fandoms going when other things falter and fade. I think it's kind of unfair to judge a whole site based on a handful of very loud and obnoxious fandoms when it's a lifeline for the smaller ones.
