I don't understand this secret, really, but...

I HATE when my fiancé reads my fic and is like "Why don't you write for real and get paid?" NO. I DON'T CARE TO GET PAID. I write what I write for fun and I'm not interested in profiting from it. Fuck off and let me write Obama giving Boehner a handjob.

That used to annoy me all the time and I still hate that attitude even now that I've reached a place where I would like to start getting paid for my writing. The same thing happens with my knitting. People tell me I should sell the stuff I make, but I don't want to.

When I got into knitting, my family asked me why I wasn't selling any of the pieces I made. I was like, okay, sure. That hat will be $50. That lace shawl would be somewhere around $500. Oh, you think that's too much? Yeah, I'm pretty sure everyone else would too, but if I wanted to actually make more than $5 an hour that's what I'd need to charge.

Exactly. People who don't make things (or buy the materials) don't realize that in order to make any significant amount of money off it, you'd have to charge for both materials AND labor. Most knitters can't find a large enough market to do this.

Yup. I don't know how many times I've explained this now.

DA

The flip side of this is, with the proliferation of fic-for-free, who has the time/wants to buy media tie-ins for their faves? Reading fic also takes up the time one would/could spend, on reading original fiction. The same applies to writing it, I would think.

TL;DR: Yeah IDK I'm tired and not making much sense.

I wouldn't mind if the rise of fanfic would mean the death of tie-in novels. Most of those are utter crap - poorly written, sloppily edited...

If you have really written that, please link to it.

It's a sequel, so you might want to read the first (linked in the summary). Enjoy.

The hilarious thing is, this reads like any other fandom's porn but with the names and some details changed.

Haha. I know. It's very Madlibs, isn't it. Change the names and a few details and it could be about anyone. I used to love mentally Madlibing generic smut with weird pairings, so.

All I can think is that our federal government would probably run a lot more smoothly if this were canon.

I don't know about that (*cough*monicalewinski*cough*), but imagining Boehner is secretly hot for Obama and desperate for his attention amuses me.

See, I'd love to make money writing. And, I even have. Thing is, it's dead hard, and you often end up writing stuff for others, or things that are not fiction.

So, it's not even that easy should you want to.

He probably says that because he thinks all pro authors make JK Rowling money. Another author who frequently makes the NYT bestseller list published her income tax papers one year and beside that listed all the hours she spends writing, editing, and promoting her books.

When the math was done, she made less than minimum wage.
