(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)I hate, hate, HATE Tauriel as a character (that creature is a violation of 90% Tolkien canon), and I seriously don't like what the movie did to Kíli (I'll be the one cheering when he finally bites it) and their relationship is just horrible, mostly because of what you already said.
When it all gets too much, remember this: Tauriel amounts to NOTHING! No matter what her alleged 'influence' is supposed to be on Legolas, by the time the Lord of the Rings rolls around, Legolas will have forgotten her completely. She will never be mentioned, never even be hinted at.
Inb4, 'you can say that about all the characters!' - maybe so. But remember, the producers and Lily herself have talked about how Tauriel's story sets up LotR. And she doesn't!!! She is non-existent by the time of Fellowship, she is gone right were she belongs: oblivion! She who is supposed to be so important to Legolas that she shapes his opinion of dwarves, will have vanished into the aether, never to be mentioned again, least of all by Legolas.
That's what I remind myself of whenever I feel like screaming at the horridness of this character: she is nothing.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)I wouldn't even mind her as an additional character if she wasn't so overrepresented in the movie.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)That would be more than a bit too much! Thranduil's character was butchered in Desolation, just to make Mary Sue here extra special. It's nauseating.
What kills me is that I've seen footage where Tauriel has been cut out of the movie. Entirely. And there is nothing missing! Nothing at all! You're right, she is hideously overrepresented, but for all that she brings nothing to the story itself. She's like cotton candy: you get this huge wad and you think 'whoa! Awesome!' But then you start consuming it and you notice it's hardly any substance and in the end you just feel sick.
