To be fair the relationship aspect is a big part of the game.

Bah. The Arishok was one of my favs from DA2 (so much that I stopped playing when I saw Act II was going to make me either kill him or betray Isabella), so this kills any lingering interest I might have had about playing DAI.

(I was actually more interested in seeing Qunari females anyhow.)

You can play as a qunari female - not the same as a companion, but pretty sweet, IMO.

The Qunari female Bioware used during one of their E3 demos was gorgeous. I knew I was going to play a female Qunari Inquisitor first try but seeing her in action solidified that goal. Though instead of being a rogue I may in fact go mage first go round. It really depends on my mood.

Sorry you're disappointed, OP, but I'm the opposite. I think he's the character I'm most excited for.

I'm pretty excited for him, even if I did also prefer the qunari designs of DA2. And Freddy Prinz Jr. honestly seems so excited to be voicing this character and the DA universe in general that I'm like: "D'awww. OK FP Jr. You do your thing."

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-07-02 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I honestly like about Freddie Prinze Jr. He seems be all excited for some of the stuff he does (like James Vega in 'Mass Effect 3', or Kanan Jarrus in 'Star Wars Rebels') and has a really energetic spirit in interviews relating to those things that I can't help but find endearing, even if I'm not interested in what he's doing (ME3 and DA:I, for instance).

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2014-07-02 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if I hadn't watched his introduction video, I'd be more skeptical, but it's clear he knows his stuff and is really hyped for it, he's not just a recognizable name phoning it in for a paycheck.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's pretty much how I feel about Prinze as well. It's hard for me to resent someone who seems to genuinely enjoy the idea of voicing a character as much as he does. He was also a cutie in that "under the horns" video he did to introduce the character (and, ngl, I think his Iron Bull voice is kind of sexy)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I was already excited for Iron Bull and then FPJ's excitement made me even more excited for not only the character but the game (if that were possible!). October why are you relatively so far away?

I had some reservations about Iron Bull right up until I saw his face in detail, actually; it's the only part of his design I really like. I agree that the DA2 qunari design was vastly superior (so much so that I modded it into Origins), and Iron Bull's look just makes me wonder how he even gets through doors (I'm not exaggerating, he's seven feet tall and like three feet wide not counting the horns, how the fuck does he fit through a standard doorway).

I suspect they made him so different from regular qunari because they didn't want Sten 2.0 - another stern and reticent soldier somehow separated from his people and tagging along with a ragtag group to save the world. Instead this guy is a spy on a backwoods assignment so that he can recover from some past trauma, still loyal to the Qun, but enmeshed enough in Thedan culture to be unique.

Frankly, though, they should have given us a female Qunari Ben-Hassrath with the same background. That would have been very different and very cool.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really unfortunate Tallis was born from Felicia Day (not that I mind her), since she couldn't play an actual Qunari.

To be fair to the Iron Bull, we've already had a lot of Qunari that are, well... what you'd expect Qunari to act like. Sten, Maraas, Ketojan, the Arishok... they were all very much by-the-book Qunari--even after abandoning both the Qun and the Tal-Vashoth, Maraas was still pretty typical from what we've come to expect from a Kossith raised under the Qun.

I'm glad that Iron Bull is a departure from all of that, because if he weren't, he'd run the risk of being Sten 2.0, or just more of the same. While I understand the desire to sun around with Sten again (or even someone as charismatic and awesome as the Arishok) I think it's pretty cool that we're going to see a Kossith who isn't everything we expect.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, for someone who insists on using 'kossith'--a term the Qunari don't use for themselves--it's funny you get the grammar wrong. It's not capitalized, because it's not a proper noun, same way 'human' or 'elf' isn't.

Part of me kind of agrees with you because I'm shallow and I thought the Qunari designs were appealing (and I totally shipped Saemus/Ashaad even though we never actually saw the latter character alive) but I still think Iron Bull looks cool so I can deal. Plus I have a thing for characters with eye patches

I am so excited for DA3, and I am excited for the companions. But I am kind of disappointed in the aesthetics of most of them. They look a lot rougher, I guess, than the DA2 designs, and I really loved the DA2 designs. So much prettiness in DA2, so little in DA3. But maybe the released images don't do them justice.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
From an aesthetic viewpoint I can agree. Why is his face an upside down triangle with longhorns? That's not the Qunari I lusted liked in DA2!

But then there's the eyepatch, which I'm weak to in fiction, and then he's just massive and will help make "me" feel small in game (I hope). Despite being from a stern, non-smiling, doesn't outwardly show emotion save for anger and/or battlelust culture, he's going to different! I'm curious if he can show non-followers of the Qun that you can still be a follower but without the dour and glower.

I'm not entirely sold on FPJ's chosen voice for Iron Bull. I need to see Iron Bull in action and converse with him before I decide one way or another. I personally wouldn't have expected Iron Bull's voice to sound so...sophisticated. Not say I'd expected him to sound like a dumbass just not refined. In either case, I'm holding off judgement for now on the chosen voice.

Also: maaaaaaaayheeeeeeeem. In the end, I'm just hoping that Iron Bull and my Inquisitor will get to break many a bed together.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care for the Qun at all, and while I liked Sten as a character, it was the "softie" side of him that won me over- I still find most of his beliefs pretty untenable.

I'm divided on IB, though. I think his body model is disgusting, and his face is actually hard for me to look at. I could see him being an entertaining party member, what with FPJ selling the hell out of his dialogue, but I'll be annoyed if he does end up being a bisexual male love interest, if only because we really don't need another indiscriminate hedonist repping for us bisexuals.

The Qunari design was great in DA2, it's really a pity that it didn't stay more like it was. But I'm even more sad about the elves - they had a completely different facial structure/body type going in DA2, and even if the eyes were a little big, it was nice to see elves that didn't look like pointy eared humans. Now it's going in that direction again.

We don't know who the romance options will be yet, right? So far I'm kind of disappointed by any male option, they are all very ugly or DO NOT WANT to me (Solas is bald, Dorian has that ridiculous mustache and is a Tevinter magister, the Iron Bull is cool but not my type, same goes for the Grey Warden, I like Varric but I must have been the only one who didn't want to fuck him, I never cared much for Cullen and I kind of doubt Cole is a LI, also I ship him with Rhys)...

Honestly, of what I've seen a lot of the characters fall under the "not like other__" Trope. Varric, Merrill, Dorian, Iron Bull. Arguably many others.

Here's really not that different than the other characters.

I feel you, OP. I was really excited to get a post DAII Qunari perspective in the party. Maybe from one who was a little less uptight then Sten? But now that I know he's basically the anti-Qunari I'm not so excited anymore. I'm sure he's fun and I'll like him and all, but I'm still disappointed.
