Does anyone else like episodes where friends or couples have big fights?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like I'm alone in this. Every other fan seems to hate it when friends or couples have a big fight or misunderstanding, even when it's not OOC and doesn't drag on too long. But I love it. I feel like seeing them seriously fight and then make up highlights the depth of their relationship.

You're not alone. I'm a big fan of breaking up and making up, handled well. But then I also like stories driven by misunderstandings, assuming the conflict doesn't drag on too long and is ultimately solved by-- wait for it-- communication.

I usually find the fights really uncomfortable and hard to watch (though every now and again they're *great*) but what I really like and often find a lack of is the despair and loneliness that seems personally quite reasonable to expect if it was a super close relationship that just crumbled. Particularly if one person very much did not want things to end.

TBH, I hate that sort of thing. If they fight *too* often, it makes me question why they're friends/lovers at all. There's enough conflict in real life, what I want from my media is pleasant escapism. I'd prefer to see characters confronting problems that are external to themselves, rather than fighting amongst themselves.

Yes, but only if it happens very rarely.

lmao, I doubt anyone cares but spoilers for Drake and Josh

Sometimes, yes. (Unless it's all those characters do and there isn't even any humor in it.) On occasion those are even my favorites (because you get to see how well they manage without each other, how much they miss each other, etc).

It's a goofy example, but Drake and Josh did this in an episode and that episode is probably my favorite. (IIRC it's called 'Josh is Done'.) Drake had pissed Josh off beyond his limit and Josh (finally) steps up and says, "You know, I'm through with you. I don't want to be friends with you anymore." And the funny thing is as soon as he drops Drake, his life starts going so well. It's like he's had a curse lifted; he's happy, finds new friends, his rash clears up (lol), but Drake is absolutely miserable and has never been so out of sorts. It ends in Drake being shoved into a chemical shower at school, almost crying in front of his entire class whilst apologizing to Josh, and running off to sulk and be embarrassed. Josh DOES forgive him and they go back to normal, but it's kind of nice to see the 'cooler' character take the separation that much harder, and to see that even when you fuck up that doesn't mean you can't still be forgiven.

I've seen that episode. It was a good one. I was most impressed by how calm Josh was while Drake's world was falling apart.

IA, I found it interesting how well Josh took it. Josh obviously cares about Drake a great deal and so on some level he must've missed Drake too, but he moved on with his life and was enjoying himself. Drake was just completely devastated and barely seemed like the same person. Like Drake said, he DOES need Josh more than Josh needs him, but I think that's one of the reasons Josh forgave him; the fact that Drake cared so much made him come to the conclusion that any pain, misfortune or frustration that came from associating with Drake was worth it.

I do, but I'm weird about this.

I seem to have a thing for big fights that are followed by some tragedy or potential tragedy that makes the people involved realize how petty the fight is.

I'm fine if they resolve it later on their own sans tragedy, too, but I find it more interesting with a dash of drama.

Community did conflict very well, most of the time. I didn't think much of the Valentine's Day episode but the Jeff vs. group fight over the Barenaked Ladies was hilarious. Troy and Abed's fight in Pillows and Blankets was serious and I bought its high stakes, but the resolution was amazing and I think they needed that conflict.

One of the fighting examples I loathe is Ross and Rachel's break-up in Friend's third season, actually anytime they fought made me question why they were so in love.
