How to do it! I'm a little unconfident in my ability to hold a voice, for starters. Should I just go back and review canon every time I start getting shaky, or what?

In that case, yeah, try to keep canon details as straight as you can. Are you playing a canon character, or an OC?

One piece of advice I'd give to any new RPer is never to call the actions/reactions of another player. It might be wildly OOC for them and they might resent it/have a different notion of how they would act or react. It's one of my huge pet peeves wrt RPing and I dump anyone who keeps doing that in short order.

If that makes you feel more confident, go ahead. A lot of the best character portrayals are ones that expand on the canon though. For starting out, just choose a character that you identify with especially and play her/him/other close to the way you would react yourself.

The idea is to get into the headspace of the character, not just try to make them do the same actions they do in canon over and over again. It's largely like attempting to write an AU fic and keep a character in-character.

It can be helpful to collect a list of recognizable personality traits and motivations and try to remember them when you decide how to respond to a post. I also like to frame reactions in terms of ultimate goals, for example: "The most important thing in his/her life is family, and they would do anything to protect them including murder and torture." It really lends an element of familiarity if you are always playing a character with a certain base concept like that in mind.

I wouldn't go back and review the entirety of your canon every time you feel a little shaky, because when you first start out, you're going to feel shaky a lot. Pretty much everyone does, and there's a bit of initial shakiness every time you pick up a new character. Instead, try picking a few snippets of canon (a five minute scene, or a few pages) that really emphasize your character's core traits, or showcase how they react to certain moods, and use those when you're feeling a bit wobbly.

One thing that's really important to keep in mind is that it is okay to go for the second or third most IC reaction. You don't have to hit exactly what your character would do in canon every time, especially if it would disrupt your plans or shut scenes down cold. You shouldn't go wildly out of character, but you should be a little bit flexible.
