What are you trying to ask us here?
Re: RP
Re: RP
One piece of advice I'd give to any new RPer is never to call the actions/reactions of another player. It might be wildly OOC for them and they might resent it/have a different notion of how they would act or react. It's one of my huge pet peeves wrt RPing and I dump anyone who keeps doing that in short order.
Re: RP
The idea is to get into the headspace of the character, not just try to make them do the same actions they do in canon over and over again. It's largely like attempting to write an AU fic and keep a character in-character.
It can be helpful to collect a list of recognizable personality traits and motivations and try to remember them when you decide how to respond to a post. I also like to frame reactions in terms of ultimate goals, for example: "The most important thing in his/her life is family, and they would do anything to protect them including murder and torture." It really lends an element of familiarity if you are always playing a character with a certain base concept like that in mind.
I hope that helps.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 06:39 am (UTC)(link)One thing that's really important to keep in mind is that it is okay to go for the second or third most IC reaction. You don't have to hit exactly what your character would do in canon every time, especially if it would disrupt your plans or shut scenes down cold. You shouldn't go wildly out of character, but you should be a little bit flexible.

If you're unsure of your voice, definitely do a canon review. I have developed headcanon for the characters I play, which builds on the canon, and I use it in all of my games.
The only thing I don't really like about RPs are the "How's My Driving" stuff. I've often seen them used to blast muns on their characterizations, rather than questioning the reason the mun is playing that way.
Re: RP
(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 06:31 am (UTC)(link)Also, and this is more warning from my own experience, a lot DW and LJ rps tend to very fast**. So, unless you're planning on being around for a while it's probably not a good idea to start a thread or post. Note - I'm not saying that's bad or good, just a thing a lot of people don't expect going in.
*And speaking as someone whose had people do "SURPRISE RAPE!" while rping with me...it's very, very strongly recommended unless they've stated that they're okay with that somewhere.
**I've had IM rps that moved slower than several LJ/DW ones I've been in.
Re: RP
(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 06:57 am (UTC)(link)In general, if the game's heavy on prose RP, it'll be slower. If it's mostly quick dialog RP, it can speed by.
Re: RP
(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)That's why I said "a lot" not all. And, at least from what I've seen of that scene rp-wise...well. Let's just say I've seen more people prefer not to prose rp. [And an odd amount make huge fuss about not wanting to read when asked why - which is just weird to me, but each to their own.]
