I guess what I wish I'd been told when I started, decide your limits and preferences and stick to them. Don't let anybody push you into playing a plot or a character you don't like just because it would make them more comfortable; some players will try mold everyone they meet into their ideal partner instead of actually take the time to search for those who share their preferences. You don't do porn, or you don't play het, or you're not into themes like drug use, or you don't want to start a romance with that particular character, you've got a right to that, be communicative about it OOC and expect it to be respected in-game.

Seconding the above advice, and adding that if you're playing in a formal game and you feel like someone is trying to badger you into doing something you're uncomfortable with, go to the mods. That's what they're there for, and they'll be happy to help you resolve the situation.
