[tw: suicide anon from a month ago]

I've been on my medication two days (I'm keeping the bottle at work and using a pill case). I know it takes some time to kick in. The only thing is the side effects of this stuff are...not pleasant. I don't plan to stop it unless directed, but does anyone have tips for coping with them? Because the fun part will be doing my usual stuff without anybody knowing I'm medicated. So far I'm just getting dizziness, nausea, leg and jaw cramps, and a severe headache. That's subsided a lot today, but does anyone have tips for the future?

For cramps, try taking a little bit more magnesium. It can be bought over the counter in any local pharmacy in a liquid form that doesn't taste half bad and usually gets rid of the issue.

Dizziness and nausea might be helped by diphenhydramine tablets if there are no contraindications.

Drink lots of water, get lots of rest, and give your body some time to adjust. Steer clear of coffee and eat something light and neutral flavored like plain bread, or my personal post-nausea standby: saltine crackers and consommé broth.

Distract yourself whenever possible. Getting your mind off of your physical condition will help immensely with being able to bear it until things get sorted out. Stupid action movies, video games, or doing something light with your hands (like puzzles or baking) are all great options.

Thanks. I found plain graham crackers and peppermint tea have helped a lot the last couple days. And eating in general. Which was hard because the last thing I want to think about when I'm nauseous is food.

The nausea and headache have more or less subsided (I'm still armed with Pepto that my boss bought for me this morning and Tylenol-with-caffeine just in case), and now it's just mild dizziness and random cramping (mostly my legs).

Give it a week. If it hasn't gotten better by then, it's worth another appointment.

I'm sorry, OP. :( I don't know what you're taking, but sometimes I carry around peppermint or ginger flavored candy for nausea.

I'm a bad person to advise on meds because side effects made me stop them in the past. I'd say, stick with it for a while and see how works with the actual issue it's supposed to treat.

That being said, don't be afraid to go to your doctor and ask if there is other medication available.

I any case, I'm glad you're still here, anon.

Talk to your doctor about them. If nothing else these should be watched - you may have to change meds, or doses. Even if not, it's likely these are known side effects, and your doctor's likely in a good position to suggest something to mitigate them.

Some side effects are temporary, and tend to fade as your body becomes accustomed to the medication. Others, you may have to treat on a symptom-by-symptom basis, or talk to your doctor about changing medication or dosage. Either way, it's a good idea to keep the conversation open with your doctor, so they know what's going on and so you can get advice.

Thank you for checking in. I hope the meds turn out to be effective and the side effects subside soon.

The nausea and headache have subsided a lot. To the point that I'm not fighting to move and can concentrate and get stuff done (and I'm armed with Peoto and tension headache stuff that the pharmacist said were safe to take). So I hope that was just temporary. Now It's more the dizziness (though not as bad) and an overall "slow" feeling.

+1. The side effects might be temporary (hopefully!) but in case they aren't, def don't feel embarrassed to call your doctor up and ask if there's anything they can do. You might need a change of medicine, or they might be able to give advice to lessen the side effects.

Glad you're making progress, anon.

I would say, monitor them, and see if they subside in a week or so (most will). I felt really whack for the first week I went on my anti-depressants (like, jittery, high blood pressure, couldn't sleep, just off) but then I got used to them and it was okay.

But if they persist for much more than a week, chat to your doctor about them.

Thanks. It really did hit me like an 18-wheeler the first two days. Thankfully I haven't had the diarrhea problem and haven't actually thrown up (though I really really wanted to; I'm an emetophobe, so I've gotten pretty good at controlling it because do not want).

That's mostly gone now, except I'm kind of queasy in the mornings. But I blame that also on my house being a hotbox. I'm mostly okay once I get to work and have a desk fan blowing on me.

I second Crazymeds. Strongly. I use them for every med change I wind up doing.

Side effects for SSRIs can last up to two weeks before your body adjusts to it and they go away. If they last longer than that, let your doctor know, but in the meantime ime all you can really do is grin and bear it for those two weeks.

Definitely talk to your doctor about the side effects if they continue. I had such severe nausea when I started my anti-depressants that I barely ate for two weeks, before I finally got my ass back to the doctor. And you might find this link helpful http://www.wingofmadness.com/what-to-do-during-the-first-two-weeks/

I'm really glad you're making progress though *hugs*

I wish I could give you some helpful advice, but all I can offer is support. ♥ Hugs for you, anon. I really hope things get better soon.
