What I can't stand is how tumblr takes characters who are clearly meant to be commentary on gender ROLES and goes "LOL THEY MUST REALLY BE TRANS!". It invalidates the entire point of their characterization and just reinforces sexism and gender essentialism by implying that any character who questions gender roles or doesn't quite fit into what we consider to be the standards of "male" or "female" can't actually be their birth gender.

Which is pretty fucked up, when you think about it.

Well, the problem is there is a serious lack of trans characters in pretty much all media. If there were more characters who were textually trans, then trans audience members wouldn't have to latch onto characters who don't adhere to gender roles and have all these trans headcanons for them. But there aren't, so they're all kind of grasping at straws because it's as close as they're getting to seeing themselves in the media they enjoy.

(Standard disclaimer that of course there are also just some nutty, vocal Tumblr users who take this kind of thing too far and get really vicious about it, and those kids need to stop.)

The thing is, a lot of the people who so aggressively latch onto trans headcanons nowadays are not actually trans people who want representation, it's cis girls who think they're being so ~progressive~ by following the newest trend. And they are the ones trying to silence actual trans people by telling them "this is not what being trans is". And it sucks.

I also feel like people seriously overestimate the amount of trans people in this world. Yes, a step onto tumblr or some choice LGBTQ+ platforms may make you think that the world is full of trans people, but it's really just a teensy tiny percentage. I understand that there should be some representation of trans people in media and I agree with that. But how would it be realistic (for lack of a better word) to have every media teeming with trans people when there actually aren't that many of them in RL?
