They both make really good animated movies. I honestly don't see any reason to throw shade on one or the other. The fact that Miyazaki is still doing things basically traditionally, as far as animation style, doesn't actually make it worse; it's a style that still fundamentally works and Miyazaki and Takahata are incredibly fucking good at executing it. Similarly, the lack of a musical is more a difference of style than anything else.

I don't know. I guess I would agree that Disney is better at advancing the technical art of animation, but I don't think that's the same standard as judging them by how good the movies they make are, and I care way more about the latter.

Doing more technically innovative thing doesn't mean you necessarily make better movies. That said, I've enjoyed and not really enjoyed movies by both studios. They're both capable of good work or missteps.
