I would say go get a makeup lesson at like a Clinique or Origins or MAC counter. Or alternate all three. Just get an idea of what you like, what different techniques they use, etc.

I don't live close enough to a big city to have access to places like that, but I can try to find something similar?

You don't have a mall with a department store within driving distance? It doesn't have to be a "big" city. Any Dillard's will have Clinique in it.

I do have a Dillard's! I'll go there, thank you--I thought you were referring to a specialized store or something. XD

Some Dillard's also have an Origins counter, and I think most have Estee Lauder as well. So you can probably get several different lessons.
