Make up advice?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello everyone! So...I've never worn makeup before, at all. It just wasn't important to me when I was younger, and I've always had really good skin. But I was thinking recently that I might want to give it a shot on a casual basis, to wear to work in the office and stuff. The problem is I have no idea where to start or what some of the things I see advertised are even for. I tried youtube tutorials, but there are so many that I don't know where to begin there either (and, frankly, I'm not really sure what "too much makeup" means anyway.)

Anyone have any advice or recommendations?

What are you looking for - too look more professional/cover up an imperfection, to look like you're wearing make up/not wearing makeup?

Just to look more professional, I think. A little more polished, maybe?

My recommendation: get a friend's help. Otherwise you may end up looking like a clown. I tried to follow some nice tutorials, and it was a disaster.

...none of my female friends really wear makeup. I'd ask my sister, but she's three states away. D:

Are you me?? I haven't really gotten into makeup yet, but my friend (a makeup artist) did mine when I got married recently, and she said that if I wanted to start with a simple makeup look, I could just use a good foundation (to smooth skin out a bit). Personally if I wanted to wear makeup, I'd do a little blush and maybe a neutralish eyeshadow; eyeliner can look a bit harsh, but a brown rather than black color would work if you don't use a heavy hand (sorry to say, but...Kate Middleton). I'm not into lipstick because it gets everywhere, but a natural color would work there too if you wanted a bit of pop.

Maybe that is semi-useful?? (Basically I am too lazy for daily makeup...)

That might work. I think once I figure out what sort of things to buy I'll work on getting the amounts right. It's difficult when I don't know anyone in person who can help, though. :/

Since it's an everyday look, my advice, if you live in the US is to go to a Sephora store, they do free makeup, just tell them what you're looking for, they can ID your skin tone, give you tips on the best colors for you, etc.

That aside, since it only sounds like you want something minimal, maybe you can try:

a) basic lipstick, some mascara or eyeliner (nothing dramatic)
b) follow A. but add foundation first (or a finishing powder/primer before the foundation).

Try to go somewhere where you can test out certain foundations, figure out which ones work best with your skin/what kind of look you like.

I don't like to use makeup often, and while I've learned how to do a basic primer, foundation, etc, I generally use some lipstick / mascara/eyeliner if i feel like wearing any. Good luck!

Thank you! This was very helpful; now I at least know where to start looking! :)

I would say go get a makeup lesson at like a Clinique or Origins or MAC counter. Or alternate all three. Just get an idea of what you like, what different techniques they use, etc.

I don't live close enough to a big city to have access to places like that, but I can try to find something similar?

Re: Make up advice?

You don't have a mall with a department store within driving distance? It doesn't have to be a "big" city. Any Dillard's will have Clinique in it.

I do have a Dillard's! I'll go there, thank you--I thought you were referring to a specialized store or something. XD

Some Dillard's also have an Origins counter, and I think most have Estee Lauder as well. So you can probably get several different lessons.

What about foundation (just use a little bit to even out the skin tone on your face), some light eyeliner, and mascara? You could also try a lipstick or lipgloss, if you wanted.

I usually just wear some mascara, tinted lipbalm, and fill in my brows. I seriously look like a different person without doing my brows.

Go to the makeup counter at a department store and explain what you're after and let them work with you and do your makeup.

The easiest thing to do is a light eyeshadow, white or cream, patted with finger on your eyelids and a lipgloss. And maybe some powder. Foolprooved.

Eyepencil is also easy - just don't press hard, go over the same place a few times instead. Fill up places between your eyelashes.

Mascara - brush your eyelashes before applying. It's kinda universal thing, so you can look up a tutorial and trust it) You'll need to bin an old one after 3-4 months (see on a pacckage), so don't invest in it. You can also buy an eyelashes curler...

Foundation is more tricky. Don't forget to blend it near your hairline. You can try colors on the inner part of your wrist in a shop.

Anyway, start small and see which brannds you like. Makeupalley is one of the sites with reviews.

I don't even know where to begin on this subject because I'm a bit obsessed, but what comes to mind, since it sounds like you're wanting a polished/professional look for work...

I think foundation, blush, mascara and some sort of lip color (you could even do a tinted lipbalm if you don't want to do a full coverage lipstick) would be a good place to start, and make sure your eyebrows are groomed (nice eyebrows can make a huge difference in how you look!). If they're light and/or sparse, you can fill them in with a pencil or powder, or if they're dark and/or pretty thick, you can just use a clear gel to hold them in place. If you've never done anything with them, it might be a good idea to go to a salon or something and have them give you an initial shape, and then you can tweeze them yourself after that to maintain the shape. If not, there are plenty of Youtube videos on eyebrows.

I think the video tutorials can be really helpful if you keep it simple (like one topic/area of the face at a time). Obviously it can overwhelming if you watch a 20 minute long video that's for the entire face and you don't even know how to do the basics, but it shouldn't be too confusing if you keep it simple. For example, you can search for something like "beginner's foundation routine", or "how to apply blush". Also, there are plenty of "what not to do" videos that have some good tips on avoiding common mistakes.

Going to a makeup counter/store like other people have suggested might be a good idea, too. Once you get the hang of it and figure out what you personally like you might end up completely disagreeing with the people at the counters/stores, but if you're a total beginner it could be a good starting place.

All I do when I need to look professional is use a bit of concealer to cover up some veins around my nose/ pimples I might have, and some under my eyes to look a bit more bright eyed and bushy tailed (I have pretty good skin too so I've never needed full faced foundation), then put on a little bit of mascara and lip gloss. I reapply the lip gloss during the day. Then my neat hair and business clothes do the rest of the 'professional' look for me.

You really don't need to do much, believe me.

If you do start wearing a bit of foundation or concealer, make sure you get in to a good routine of washing it off everyday to prevent it breaking out out. You don't need to go in for all the cleanser/toner jazz if you're skin is pretty clear usually - I personally just wash my face with water, put on my combo moisturizer and SPF, wait for that to sink in then put on my concealer/ foundation. Then wash all my makeup off with an unscented moisturising cream and a tissue at the end of the day.

Totally forgot that part, but moisturizer and SPF is important. As is washing all your makeup off. (There are all kinds of makeup remover wipes now, so maybe OP would be interested in that. It's an easy, quick way to take everything off and you can easily carry them with you in a purse for convenience.)

Everyone else has already given you good advice, but I'll just repeat that going to a store like Dillard's or Sephora would be a great start. There's plenty of makeup tutorials online too, so if you need to know how to do a specific thing just google it/youtube it. (What ghostofcairo said is true, if you just search 'makeup turtorials' you're probably going to be overwhelmed, but if you want to learn how to apply eyeliner then search for that specifically.)

Also, idk if you're going to end up using it or not, but if you ever decide to try liquid foundation, I've found this page to be very helpful. http://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/makeup-tipshow-to/how-to-apply-liquid-foundation/

Before seeing that I had never used a makeup brush for foundation before, and let me tell you, it makes a huge difference. Which leads me into the topic of brushes; I'm sure not everyone uses them, but for me they've made a world of difference. Some people say that the more expensive the brush the better quality and the better coverage you'll get, but I've been using elf brushes for a while now and they've been perfectly fine for me. If you want to try some brushes out, then maybe start with cheaper ones, see how you like them, and if you do work up to the more expensive ones. (Oh, and eyeslipsface.com is the elf website, if you just want to see what brushes they have. There's a brush for almost everything so I know it can be confusing, but of course you can think on it and see if you want to give any of them a shot. Since you just want to look more 'professional' then you can probably get away with just using some BB cream, CC cream or foundation, maybe a bit of powder and blush, and possibly a tinted lip gloss and some mascara. And again, what ghost said about eyebrows is correct; they can change your face. Even if I don't feel like doing much else, I always fill my eyebrows in a little; it gives me a more put together look.)

Oh, and while I'm at it I'll link two eyeshadow tutorials I like. (Though imo false eyelashes aren't necessary and I wouldn't bother. You could always mess around with different colors too, or go lighter if you want.)

Forgot to say: if you end up trying any of the elf brushes, get the slightly more expensive black ones. The white ones are not great, but the black ones have worked rather well for me.
