Comics.

Is the format or the content?

The content, though I'm not really into the format either. I don't like the Monster of the Week style, the tone, the retcons - the last one I knew would be a problem, but I gave it a shot anyway 'cause I like the idea of a very elaborate urban fantasy world.

Perhaps you'd like non-American graphic novels? The ones by Marjane Satrapi are a very different form of writing and artwork, for example.

This is a little vague though. What are you specifically looking for in a comic?

Cause making rec lists? Kinda /co/'s thing.

This is a great selection of comics. Honestly, I believe there's a comic for everyone. No matter what you like, there's a comic out there that's just waiting for you to fall in love with it.

On the subject of recs, is any of the above stuff complete but not like, six hundred books/issues long? Because the majority of those look interesting/the art looks amazing but I can't afford to shell out for huge series right now. :

Transmet and Y: The Last Man are, I think, both 10 volumes long.

Preacher is 9, and Sandman is 10/11 (depending on if you count the Endless Nights short stories in with the rest of the main series). League of Extraordinary Gentleman is something like 4 volumes?

Also, Atomic Robo has some FCBD issues up online: http://www.atomic-robo.com/free-comics/ The main series itself is ongoing, I think, but it's a super-fun read and I highly recommend getting into it if you like what you see on the link there.

Bone comes in either nine volumes or one big fat one.

I have been trying so hard to get thru the new Deadpool series (my first time reading comics other than TWD) but it is hard. I think I would have an easier time if they were in a big book together (like how I read The Walking Dead comics).

I haven't bought monthly comic books in years and have moved entirely onto trades, because I couldn't stand the ads taking up half the book.

I just hate how short they are. Is a trade a big collection of comics? Because I have an easier time with those.

Trades (trade paperbacks) are the most common way for comics to be collected. They include 6 single issues. There are also hardcovers and omnibuses.

But if you're reading it from the beginning, why is it bothering you? You've got over 30 issues to read back-to-back, plus the Infinite series.

I wouldn't mind the waiting. I just hate having to (I use a kindle) switch after each comic I read. And because of space issues, I can't keep them all on my kindle. Plus it is just so much trouble adding them to the kindle.

Plus I am always worried I am going to accidentally read one out of order or forget what happened last time. I just like everything neatly bundled together. :C

But I am trying to get through them. Slowly but surely.

Oh you're reading digitally. They sell digital trades as well - calling them collected editions.

I'll look for those! Might make this whole thing easier if I can at least read in 6 story chunks.

Same. I think it's the endless characters and the endless groups (I know someone asked 'Why reboot Big Hero 6??? Why not The Eternals??' and I was like 'Who??? they sound cool.') and the ENDLESS continuities for some of these characters.

It's just not my thing.

Do you mean all comics (webcomics, newspapers, superheros, independent, manga?) and dislike the medium of presentation in general or just some particular genres?

Re: Things you wanted to like, but couldn't

(Anonymous) 2014-07-04 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Superhero comics, mainly. The presentation's not my favorite, but I like some webcomics and manga just fine, I just can't get into Marvel/DC. I haven't tried any independent ones though.

I can't get into comics because I can't read them properly. My eyes just refuse to follow the panels in the proper order and I end up bouncing around the page like my brain is trying to absorb it all in one shot.

Guided view would be for you then. (It's a feature in (legally purchased) digital comics that guides you from panel to panel, showing just what's in each, one at a time.
