And in cases where the characters are canonically besties/soulmates (platonically or romantically), not caring about other friends or even just other people in general.

So much this. People can have more than one important person in their lives at any one time. They can have lots, even!

One thing I like about X-Men fandom (at least, when I was in it ten years ago), is that in general fics tended to have a supporting cast that was treated well. Sometimes I even forget certain characters aren't actually best friends!

Yup, I love my OTP's but I also love them having strong friendships outside of their romantic relationship.
