You perfectly described why I think the reboot movies fail as Trek movies. I completely feel that the reboot movies were very intentionally created to be for the mass movie audience, and not for pre-existing Trek fans.

I agree, although I do think they tried to keep fans interested with things only fans would notice.

It is the most successful Trek ever for a reason. It was appealing to more than just the niche fans. I think this was a smart move on their part and to be honest, I've been a fan of Trek for over thirty years, ahem, and it is my favorite Trek movie.

I was disappointed in ST:ID. It was really unnecessary to reboot one of the more successful TOS Trek movies. Orci didn't want to do it, and he was right, they shouldn't have.

Personally I think the problem was they couldn't decide what type of movie it was. Was it a "how the gang got together" Origin [*spit*] Story, or was it a Space Action adventure? They couldn't decide, tried to do both, and failed because there was too much to be crammed into one movie so ended up just giving us the cliff notes version of both. If they wanted a Space Action movie they should just have came in with the Enterprise in space and Kirk in the chair, because there was no pressing reason (other than padding out the franchise) to do an Origin Story.

Everyone, even the most die-hard of non SF fans knew who Kirk, Spock, Scotty and the "Oh My"-guy were. They required no fresh introduction. If they wanted to do a "how the gang got together" movie, then that is a full movie right there. Kirk puzzling through the Kobayashi Maru simulator and not getting thrown out are acts three and four.

They tried to do too much and ended up doing too little with all the points.
