(Anonymous) 2014-07-04 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)It is the most successful Trek ever for a reason. It was appealing to more than just the niche fans. I think this was a smart move on their part and to be honest, I've been a fan of Trek for over thirty years, ahem, and it is my favorite Trek movie.
I was disappointed in ST:ID. It was really unnecessary to reboot one of the more successful TOS Trek movies. Orci didn't want to do it, and he was right, they shouldn't have.
Re: The reboot was one step forward, two steps back
Everyone, even the most die-hard of non SF fans knew who Kirk, Spock, Scotty and the "Oh My"-guy were. They required no fresh introduction. If they wanted to do a "how the gang got together" movie, then that is a full movie right there. Kirk puzzling through the Kobayashi Maru simulator and not getting thrown out are acts three and four.
They tried to do too much and ended up doing too little with all the points.
