What did he do to be an asshole? I liked his character in the book. He wasn't as awesome and interesting as Rita, but he was okay. So spoiler me please, I'm curious.

Hmm, he just wasn't very likeable? In the movie, he started out as this slick dude who joined the army just because it suited him and didn't actually want to get his hands dirty?

I greatly enjoyed that, yes. It was most effective: most of my ire was exorcised by him getting the shit kicked out of him for an hour so at the end i could root for the character

Yeah, Tom Cruise dying over and over again is the only appeal the movie has for me. I'm not paying to see it, though.

honestly, i thought so too, but then i actually went to see the movie, and it has a lot more to recommend it.

it's really fun and enjoyable, and Emily Blunt's character is AWESOME.

and also Tom Cruise is surprisingly not that bad. I mean, his Tom-Cruise-ness doesn't really get in the way. it's one of his better films.

Seeing Tom Cruise die over and over is one of the two reasons I want to see this movie. The other would be Emily Blunt kicking ass.

And was interested purely for the plot.
I should probably get the book since it seems there is one.

Haven't seen it yet (vaguely wanted to because of how much I heard it was like a video game) but I recall an interview where Cruise said the character was supposed,/i> to be an unlikeable coward, he doesn't want to be a hero and doesn't want this Groundhog Day godmoding or whatever it is, but he has to step up and save shit anyway. That sounded like a promising new slant rather than Cruise's usual "smarmy awesome at everything guy."
