Which is why a hobby that should have been safe haven for the geeks and nerds and uncool among us doesn't get my support.

correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't cosplaying dressing up to look like characters? so it seems only logical that people who look the most like the characters they're dressed up as will get the most attention.

Accept a lot of cosplayers don't look that much like the characters they're cosplaying as, or their armor isn't exact replicas of the armor from the game/movie/show. Put an attractive woman in a more-revealing-than-original cosplay againt a guy or average woman in a fully-concealing but more accurate costume, and the attractive woman will receive more attention and probably win more awards.

Yeah, no, that is completely untrue. One of my good friends is a Master-level cosplayer. She almost always cosplays male characters and the costumes she picks tend to be fully-concealing and she's won dozens of awards, often against cosplayers in skimpier costumes. Another one of my friends is most decidedly plus-sized but makes beautiful costumes and she can't walk ten feet at a con without someone asking her for a photo. She's also World Cosplay Summit-level. The cosplay I did that got the most people stopping me for photos was a male character in an elaborate full-length coat.

Sure, attractive cosplayers will get plenty of attention just by virtue of being attractive, but it isn't true at all that average-looking cosplayers or cosplayers in non-skimpy outfits get ignored-- if their costumes are good.

Attention, yes, awards, no. (Source: cosplaying for years and winning quite a few awards myself.)

For sure, I definitely saw random dumbasses looking at a tiny, cute Japanese girl in a terrible store-bought costume and a wig without a wig cap (so, black hair poking out underneath) calling her cosplay a of a certain character "better" than that of some slightly overweight but more accurate cosplayers who'd done painstaking craftsman ship. But those are random dumbasses. Actual judges are almost always cosplayers themselves and will be looking for workmanship and the people who ended up with the awards by the end of the day were the people who looked impressive, not hot.

I absolutely disagree with that definition of fandom or cosplay, because it sucks in so many ways I can't even begin ranting or I'll never stop.
