It's cool. Despite what ONTD and Tumblr tell you, you're not obligated to like a character just because they're POC.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know tumblr was a hive mind. ONTD is. But tumblr, nah, bro.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha. You must be hanging out in the wrong parts of Tumblr then. Or maybe I should say the right parts. It's definitely a hive mind over there.

I've heard the argument that a POC person obliged to like POC characters. *shrugs*

I haven't quite finished the first season yet, but honestly, I (somewhat) agree. I like Piper's roommate, the scary ex housecleaner lady, and I find ... I think her name is Poussey? super attractive, and the trans character is awesome and hilarious. But for the most part, the most interesting characters to me are the white ones.

Also, apparently Piper gets a lot of hate? I honestly don't (yet) see what's so unlikable about her. I get that the show treads kind of close to classism and entitlement issues, but I don't see how Piper is super entitled or whatever, like I've heard claimed. She seems like she's trying her best to get through, and is well-meaning, if a bit naive. But yeah, not finished with season 1 yet, maybe that changes.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Piper seems to get shit on Tumblr simply because she's white and middle class. She honestly doesn't seem all that entitled and "spoiled", unless we're defining spoiled as "someone who has more than someone else". Naive and oblivious? Definitely. Spoiled and entitled? No.

I wouldn't call Piper my favorite but her story isn't less important than anyone elses.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)

Yeah, that's how she came across to me. What the heck does she do to be "entitled"? (at least up until where I am in the series, lol. Episode 9, I think?) She's educated, white and middle class, but I don't recall her demanding silk sheets, frappuccinos and vegan smoothies every episode. She seems like she's just trying to get by, and had trouble adjusting (shocking?) but more or less is kind to others and tries not to make a spectacle of herself.

I remember her requesting masks when they were fixing the ceiling and there was dangerous mold in the air or whatever, complaining about prison food as a way to make small talk, and being (understandably) bitch toward her ex-girlfriend and that's it. I don't even know what the entitlement claims are referring to.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
In what world is Piper middle class? I definitely don't think she's entitled or deserves the criticisms she tends to garner, but she is at the very least, upper, upper middle class and I would classify her as rich.

A lot of people hate Piper because of what the other anon said. I personally find her kind of "meh." And I never liked the Piper/Alex ship so there's that too.

I've been liking her more in the second season than in the first... though her fiance and best friend are still super annoying.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)

Yeah, I can see how Piper might not be the most interesting character, but I don't find her unlikable at all.

I agree, her best friend is super obnoxious and has very few redeeming moments. I kind of assume her fiancee is in the process of becoming alienated toward her, so far it seems like he's trying to stay connected with her but he's putting less and less effort into it, and equating his experiences to her experiences. I don't hate him yet, but I get the sense their relationship is going to take a dive by the end of this season at least. No spoilers, please :P

Ralax. You're overthinking it!

My favourite characters are Piper, Watson, Yoga Jones, Poussey and Suzanne (when she isn't under Vee's influence, of course). I hated Tucky last year, but I think she was pretty interesting this season. And Pornstache is someone I really, really love to hate. I'm fond of Brook too, she's hysterical.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
This is kind of the perfect thing for this forum, because this isn't something I'd want to admit aloud as a white person, but if it were me I'd be thinking it and feel weird about it and need to unload it somewhere.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you OP. I tend to like the characters with the most screen time or the most development in my fandoms. That's very often men (and white men at that.) It makes me feel guilty too. But I just honestly can't get into some of the other characters and I feel like liking them BECAUSE they're women or BECAUSE they're POC is a really horrible way to go about "promoting" equality.

The sad truth is that a lot of the best written characters are still white and male. And while SJWs are right to point out that writers and Hollywood are looking at which characters are the most popular and thus promoting minorities is a good/important thing, I just can't force myself to do so.

In large part, I've dealt with this by ignoring POC or women I don't think are enjoyable in some of my fandoms and then going out and finding new (usually more obscure) fandoms that have such characters that I DO like. It's not a perfect solution, but it's the best I've managed.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I mean, you can't control who you like and who you connect to. As long as you're not actively hating a lot of the POC characters, because you may not love them, but you have to admit that they're great characters with great stories.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Diversity just makes it more likely for a broader variety of people to find characters they love and/or identify with. You don't have to love everyone.

So....do the black circles signify faves? Or not?

Either way...yeah, most of mine are, too.

Either I find (my least faves) boring? Or I fucking hate them. And luckily, I only HATE like....5, two of which are guards and the other three are inmates.

So glad one of them DIED this past season, UGH.

Just curious, which ones do you hate?
otakugal15: (B/)

[personal profile] otakugal15 2014-07-06 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much the obvious ones. Vee, Pornstache, the older white dude guard, Tucky, Hayes (I think that's her name. the one who was an airport security guard) And one more: Alex. Larry I find annoying, but her ex gf? UUUUGGGGGHHHH

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
How about Ms. Claudette? (she's not on the pic)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
My faves are a real mixed bag in this show. I love most of the characters to different degrees and for different reasons. And I think it's beautiful the way the show can just swing back a forth between making you dislike someone to feeling sorry for them or rooting for them.

I'll take a wild guess and say what you like about the characters isn't their race.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
I have the opposite problem. None of my faves with the exception of Nichols are white and admitting that feels awkward because I'm white.

Why? Do you feel like a traitor or something because of it? Btw it's the same for me. My favourite characters are almost all POC. I'm not, so what? :D

I'm finding that the white characters are getting more development this season. Which irritates me because I love that there are so many cool women of colour on that show, and I want more focus on them. (Red is still my favourite, but I want there to be more about Poussey, especially Poussey with a mohawk, and Sophia and backstory for Flaca.)
