If the choice was Rimmer or Lister, I'd choose Rimmer. At least he tries to do things. Lister just sort of coasts, and has abominable personal hygiene.

Rimmer has many admirable qualities. He's not that bad, he just gets in his own head too much, and has to live with Lister. I'd choose Rimmer over Lister any time.

Of course, it helps that Chris Barrie is a fine comic actor who can't help but imbue Rimmer with his charm.

I could imagine that living with Lister would drive anyone over the edge. Even Lister's other slob friends were frustrated with him from the few instances we saw of them. Cool guy to go drinking with in your teens and early twenties, but after that the shine on his "cool loser" attitude would seriously grate.

Aww, I liked Rimmer. Nothing ever went right for him, but I still liked him.
