Re: Fan-hated Characters That You Love (or at least like)

Yes, but Cullen is more of an exception to the rule... And even then a good half of fandom hates him to the point that the Cullen fans have had to change to a different tag to escape the never ending hate.

As far as the mage/Templar stuff... I tend to think both sides overall have points, and the best solution is some where inthy the middle.

Then again, I also think that, while the chantry has problems (like any large organization), it's not devil spawn. So I'm already on the fandom sit list.

Huh, maybe so. I'm not really in the fandom, though I used to be on the Bioware message boards regularly (ugh, I know) and I remember someone even made a mod to allow Cullen to be romanceable in DA:O. Complete with voice acting, so the mod claimed. Not a fangirl but I liked him a lot, idk. He was interesting even though he was such a minor character.

I'm sure most fans agree that in DA2, a middle ground was best. But due to Anders being the biggest troll in all of Thedas, that stopped being an option. For some reason. I don't know, fuck Kirkwall's Chantry, I would've helped Anders if they let me. lol But even though the Templars worked for the Chantry, they obviously had a legitimate purpose in keeping the mages in line because Kirkwall's mages were being possessed left and right. Of course, they were probably getting possessed because the Templars were such dicks to them, but yeah.

O thought it was interesting to see how he changed over time, but wasn't really attached.

Yeeeah, see. That attitude strikes way too close to "you deserve to die because of your religion" for me to be comfortable, particularly since I've been on the receiving end of it in RL. Doubly so since the head person o in the Chantry was sympathetic to the mages.

I don't hate the Chantry because of their religion. Pretty much all the humans follow the same religion anyway. I hate Kirkwall's Chantry because of their snide lame duck Grand Cleric who refused to actually solve the problems, and instead let them stew and grow and still refused to actually do anything about it. She was the one person who had the power to change things, and refused to do jack shit. Did not feel bad at all when she got blown up. :P She was the only one who could have controlled Meredith. Not to mention, pretty sure she harbored that one evil priestess who ended up murdering the qunari, or whatever happened. Been awhile since I replayed last, but I remember hating the Grand Cleric for a number of reasons (none of which had to do with her religion).

Also, it's a video game, so I can't really say I feel particularly bad about wanting to blow up fictional characters/buildings. And meh, even if it's something as silly as I hate the Maker religion. Which I don't, for what it's worth, but I don't particularly like it either. Too much of a deliberate parallel to medieval Christianity, complete with persecutions, to be particularly likable. But since the only religious competition seems to come from non-humans (pagan Dalish elves and the Q'un) there's not really an alternative to root for.
