What I don't understand is WHY people would ship skeevy/fucked up pairings and then not even want to treat them as skeevy and fucked up. I mean, isn't the hotness and interestingness of portraying a skeevy/fucked-up relationship the whole appeal of such a pairing? Isn't that the reason people ship pairings like that in the first place, or am I just a really weird aberration here?

They may not perceive it as skeevy and fucked up themselves. Look at Twilight - if SMeyer acknowledged how unhealthy that relationship was, I might actually like the books a lot better. But she doesn't, and I'm going to go ahead and assume Bella/Edward shippers don't either.

To be fair, readers don't always have to interpret the story the way the author intended it to be interpreted.

I mean, there are people still talking about how Romeo & Juliet was the greatest love story ever. And they're serious.

Finding out Meyers actually idealised it, and that a chunk of the fandom did too, was really jarring for me. I didn't expect the type of fandom it attracted there at all. (where's my smorgasboard of f/f and m/m btw? that side-cast should have made all the rounds)

You're not the only one intrigueing. I have a ship that is pretty fucked up, but to me, that's what makes it alluring, interesting, and it has a dynamic that makes you question the characters and wonder if they can change, etc. If it's fucked up, then call it by its name and admit you enjoy it because it is fucked up.

It is for some, others...apparently not. (IA, though. When I ship a fucked up pairing, I want it to fucked up. If it isn't I don't see the point.)
