idk, i haven't really thought this through. i just think there's been more and more diversity and ambition in the last few years. like the line between between cinema and tv is more blurred? film actors, directors and writers are beginning to take interest in tv (like matthew mcconaughey or billy bob thornton). and there's been some exploration concerning formats, like the anthology format of true detective or american horror story. it's even more apparent in my country (france) where tv shows are just beginning to take form as a real, respected medium.

I do think that this is a good era for television for some of the reasons you listed and also distribution; OiTBN is Netflix only, as is the third season of Dragons of Berk, and soon to be a full length Ever After High show.

There's also more time for compelling storylines than a two hour movie you have to wait another four years to see continue. That being said I still prefer to follow movies more than TV

Depends on the kind of entertainment. Film? 1977-1985. Video games? We're in it right now. Television? 1990s, period. Comic books? Ehh, that's a tough one... I'd have to say it's probably going to be the late 80s or late 90s.

Why the 90s for television?

Pretty much all my favourite shows are from that era.

[edit] Well, except for Titus I guess, but that started airing before 9/11 happened so IMO it counts.

For movies, tv shows, and music, right now. For video games, the 90s.

Gotta agree with rubbertea, only I love the modern media for the postmodernist tendencies, intertextuality, and incredible levels of self-awareness. I enjoy metafiction as a phenomenon and a concept. And all the genre play that is going on in modern literature is such a delight that I can't.

In terms of good material....I guess it depends on what i'm looking at?
Re: Cartoons, I don't think the 90's was as fabulous as so many say, but still good, I think higher of the early 00's than most people, & I don't necessarily think we're in a new Golden Age because we have a few well known good (as considered by the masses) shows.

I care very little about live action TV, theater, and music, so i'm not the best person to ask.

MOVIES, though, I think re: Live action we've been doing very well since about the early 00's. Animation is a little harder to pin down, but I appreciate the new players to the game that I hope surpass the old dog Disney and level the playing field in the eyes of everyday consumers.

I... don't have one?

I tend to read/watch/listen to things from a lot of different eras and even countries. Which makes me sound like a total hipster LOL. In actuality I really struggle to find things that I can enjoy 100%. Siiigh.

Late Victorian/Edwardian for books, probably. 90s for television (even though right now is probably better overall in quality, I enjoy 90s shows more, personally). And in film... uh, it's really hard not to choose the 70s and 80s, between New Hollywood and the rise of insane action blockbusters, but I'm going to go with the 30s/40s.

Late 60s/70s. My favorite music, some fun TV and movies. Although I lately have been liking the 30s/40s too (minus the TV, of course).

40s-to-early-50s. I love film noir and almost went to grad school to study film censorship between WWII and the Cold War era.

Man, this was hard, but most of my favorites are from these eras.
Music: 1700-1800, and 1960s
Comics: 1970-1991
Books: 1800 and now
Film: 1930-1950 and 1980s
TV: 1960-1990 and now

Hmmm, for video games I think maybe late 90s and now. Movies, it's kind of all over the place, I guess maybe late 90s? TV, I actually like what's out now. Comics books, definitely late 90s.

The 90s. Specifically the mid-late 90s. The FX were finally good enough, and there was still that air of hope, compassion and optimism that the Tea Partyists have wiped from our current cultural output. It was an era of fun and of cheese. That was the golden age of television, marred only by the lack of Doctor Who.

I ... tend to like and watch and read things from about everywhen, so this is surprisingly difficult. Ah. Okay.

Going by my nostalgia goggles, and the eras that make me warm and fuzzy regardless of quality? Film and TV, it's the 70s/80s, although also a lot of 60s TV. Books it'd be children's/YA books from the late 80s/early 90s, though also from a lot earlier because my granddad and parents tended to throw classics at me and I liked quite a lot of them. Music is almost completely 80s rock and pop nostalgia-wise.

Then eras I'm just randomly fond of:

Film - early cinema (1910s/20s), particularly for SF, comedy and pulp crime, 30s/40s/50s swashbucklers, noir and black comedy, 70s action thrillers, 80s fantasy, SF, punk and crime thrillers, 90s serial killer thrillers (specific, I know, but there were some good ones), oughties action and comic movies

TV - 50s/60s were really good for westerns, SF and spy shows, 70s and 80s were good for action and crime shows, as well as dark SF (though maybe I just got hung up on UFO and Blake's 7), the 90s I mostly remember awesome Aussie kids shows, usually SF or fantasy, and the oughties I've been liking a lot of crime and SF/Fantasy shows

New Wave spec fic (1970s) with select cyberpunk thrown in (Gibson and Swanwick yes, Sterling and Stephenson, not so much), TV and movies are all 80s all the time, 1600s-1800s nonfiction (yeah I know it's weird), present-day nonfiction books and documentaries, and...that's it? That's it!

so many great movies were made in the 60s and 70s, both reflecting the changes in culture at the time and the fact that they felt compelled to compete with TV.
