I dunno, but either way, it's certainly something I've had problems with. -_- I actually coined the term "soulbonsai" as an alternative to the "soulbonding" thing - I generally keep the characters reined in, but I try to adhere to whatever shape they seem to naturally drift towards, and if a little branch pops up I wasn't expecting? I consider whether to let it stay or prune it back.

I usually let it go for awhile before I decide, though, and sometimes they wind up going in a better direction than I had originally planned anyway, so it's all good.
