Yeah. Sometimes, I find it's good to "let the character run away with themselves" in the first draft to get your brain to churn out some great spontaneous ideas, and then edit the hell out of it to prune and collapse all that rambling down into something that serves the narrative trajectory of the plot or adds to the story's atmosphere. One of the biggest problems I find with fanfic writers who don't edit enough is formless repetition of some crucial point/idea/feeling/revelation, which is noticeable and irritating, and also blunts the power of the idea in question.
