(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 04:44 am (UTC)(link)This isn't stated outright anywhere in the book, as far as I can recall. And I did look for it at least once when I read through the first time. Possibly because my apathetic self notices "don't do anything and see what happens" as the first potential solution to any given problem.
It sounds like it's been fanwanked into existence afterwards. I mean, he turns up late to one of the tasks and no great horror seems to befall him. Why not just turn up a few days later? "Oops. Missed it. Damn. Guess I won't be dying today".
