Re: What are your thoughts on non-binary genders?

Agreed. When I was a kid, I spent a few years thinking that I wanted to be a boy not because I actually wanted to be male or was uncomfortable in my body but because I liked things that were traditionally coded as masculine.

Then I got older and realized that no, I was female, I was just a tomboyish girl. But at the same time, sometimes I like to be girly, and I also have some traditionally feminine hobbies.

Most people don't fit perfectly into little boxes, and that's NORMAL. It's normal to have a variety of characteristics that are both masculine and feminine, or to feel more feminine/masculine on some days than others, etc. Acting like those things are somehow special and worthy of a unique category just adds further credence to the belief that there is a particular way to be a man/woman and that if you don't fit into that, there's something weird about you.

It's not just about traits, though. I have a friend who was born male and who doesn't want to become a woman. He- which I use because he said he's fine with it and finds 'they' weird- isn't not very manly, but he's told me he doesn't like looking at himself in the mirror and 'seeing a man'. As best as I can tell it's less what he does or what role he plays in society and more hating that he has a male body with male secondary sex characteristics.

I mean he's definitely not trans, he says he doesn't want to be a woman or to have breasts or a vagina, he just hates being 'male' to the point where it's actually a problem for him. Like, what'd you call that? Seems to me he's not trans, but it sounds like dysphoria, and it's got nothing to do with how he behaves or whether he's manly or feminine or whatever.

Well, he could be a form of trans, if he thinks he'd feel more comfortable if he could transition into a more sex-neutral body. I definitely think their needs to be a place for people of the neutrois sort of persuasion, who just feel more physically comfortable presenting as gender-neutral, rather than anything to do with their behavior and preferences.
