Me too. I do watch the modern adaptations but still get thrown when people say John/Sherlock. It just feels... weird. Especially Sherlock because it's not a common first name and there's virtually no way you could say it without people remarking about ACD Sherlock Holmes only that doesn't happen in the adaptations for obvious reasons.

My brain hurts.

Yes. I avoid the adaptation fanfic for this reason: it's simply difficult for me to see them as a Holmes and Watson. Sometimes I download the fic and do a search/replace if it's a story that's highly recommended.

When you say "the adaptation fanfic", what do you mean? BBC Sherlock? Because I don't see how that would work. They are nothing like the canon characters for a start.

Yes, BBC Sherlock. It works fine, in that they just call each other Holmes and Watson instead of John and Sherlock. It was an adjustment at first but it works. After all, it's not like there are that many episodes, whereas there is much more fanfic.

I agree with you so much.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here.

Also the people who tag ACD slash with " ACD Johnlock" need to stop it right the hell now.

Gosh, I despise of all these silly portmanteaus...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT. Same. What's wrong with good old Holmes/Watson? Does what it says on the tin.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
People do this? *sigh*

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ew.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That and SH09 actually has the best Holmes and Watson actors, of all the recent adaptations. I'm with you, though, Holmes and Watson calling each other Sherlock and John is just wrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
*cough*

Er, what? Jude Law, OK, but RDJ? So not his role.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt - Agreed. I like RDJ a lot, but he's just not Sherlock Holmes.

OP

"Always good to see you, Watson." ♥

The name 'John' is so boring! It does not encompass his Watson-ness! And although Sherlock Holmes is a wonderful name, he will always be 'Holmes' to me in address.

I don't even much like these films but that isn't a shallow reason at all.

Setting is a huge part of what attracts people, so if a modern-day setting doesn't work for you that's fine.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. A shallow reason would be liking the SH09 films because they're one of the slashiest versions put to screen, because Watson has a giant cannon, or because they cheerfully don't even remotely pretend to be accurate to canon, which are all reasons why I like the SH09 films (I love ACD canon, but I actually enjoy an adaptation that just when 'eh, throw in some steampunk spy action, an occult plot and a proto-WWI, it's all good' instead of just retreading the same things over and over again).

Liking them and the original canon because of the setting, including its language and forms of address, is a much less shallow reason, trust me ;)

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
OMG yes, Watson's cannon. And Holmes' slo-mo shirtless fisticuffs, because of *course* Holmes likes to get all sweaty while Watson watches him pummel great louts.

But, um. Shallow, my dear.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that bugs me is when anyone in the media or fic writers use "Sherlock and Watson" to refer to the two of them (you never see Holmes and John, but that would bug me, too). I don't have a problem with characters in adaptations doing that, because there might be instances where people are on a first name basis with one of the pair but not the others, but it irks me when people in the real world don't use either both last names or both first names to refer to them.

LISTEN to me, people calling each other by their last name is hot

I have always wanted people to call me by last name, tbh

not just because it's hot because it makes me feel kind of cool?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
Do you have a cool last name?

[personal profile] blueonblue 2014-07-08 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I prefer "Holmes" and "Watson", but clothing is the shallow reason I love the Ritchie films. RDJ may have been miscast, but a deerstalker doesn't really fit contemporary London. (Or Victorian London, but that's a different topic.)
caecilia: (is this flame princess dressed as Lum?)

[personal profile] caecilia 2014-07-08 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I mean when you think about it it's not that shallow because the wardrobe people work just as hard as the writers, so I bet they're happy that their work is appreciated.

(off topic) Is the character in your icon doing Lum cosplay? That's kind of awesome.
