Moe I get, but why deconstruction

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Because having to read morons arguing that Madoka or Evangelion are deconstructions is painful.

They are deconstructions. You can argue that they're not good deconstructions, but that's what they were written as.

Madoka is debatable, but Evangelion isn't. Watch more mecha anime.

Nayrt

What do you recommend, pre-Eva, especially with limited time? And/or is there a good discussion or essay on what makes Eva not a deconstruction? (I don't have a ton of mecha knowledge and have wanted to delve further into it for some time. But the number and length of series, especially the juggernauts of the genre, is intimidating.)

-SDF Macross (36 episodes)and its alternative version Macross DYRL (1 film). I love this one. Main character is a soldier (an actual soldier not like the ones you usually see in anime), he doesn't pilot a super special unit but a regular one and he isn't a great pilot, some of his comrades are much better than him.

-Gundam 0080 (6 episodes).

-Gunbuster (6 episodes). The first episodes are silly, but it has one of the most awesome female main characters ever and it's all about girls saving the universe.

-Then if you ever feel like it, you should watch the Gundam 0079 compilation movies. It's a classic anime series that helped define the mecha genre. Its sequel (Zeta Gundam)is great too, but it's long (50 episodes) and its compilation movies are terrible and a mess. Evangelion took so much influence from Zeta Gundam, Shinji's character development is pretty much the same than Zeta's main character.

ayrt

Thank you very much, especially with the episode count!

(I actually remember reading Gunbuster reviews around the time of one of its earliest US releases that all pretty much boiled down to that exact statement.)

Evangelion is about what kind of kids you'd get if you put dumb teenagers in death weapons.

Madoka is about what kinda magic beings would really target young girls (and that they'd have intentions beyond "fight the evilz")

I don't get why moe?
