Moe I get, but why deconstruction

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Because having to read morons arguing that Madoka or Evangelion are deconstructions is painful.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
They are deconstructions. You can argue that they're not good deconstructions, but that's what they were written as.

I don't get why moe?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
There are things that are probably deconstructions

not nearly as many as anime fandom says, but you know how it is

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That's an odd choice of words to pair like that.

That's what I was thinking. But I'm not an anime fan, so maybe it makes sense for them.

It's aimed at Madoka.

Which is hailed by a large fanbase as a "deconstruction of (moe) magical girl anime".

Eh...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-07 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know…I see how that can be annoying, but I think there's legitimate points to be made. Particularly for the deconstruction aspect. Like Death Note being a deconstruction of common shonen tropes. Or Naoki Urasawa's Monster being a deconstruction of the "complete monster" trope.

It depends. But I can see where it'd be off-putting if people won't stop trying to push their ideas as objective fact.

OT but those are some pretty eggs.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
But Madoka is a deconstruction...?
That's like getting pissy at people calling the sky blue.
What else are we supposed to call it?

I don't think you can call it a deconstruction when it unabashedly and lovingly plays genre tropes straight. It makes the mentor the villain, and it lets characters die when they screw up, but it's still a show about young girls trying to be heroes and fight against evil, and they ultimately find a way to make a difference.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
DA

It's not that unique when you compare it to every show ever, but it's a deconstruction within its genre. Main characters dying and and cute mentors being evil are not typical for magical girl shows.

I don't think those two things are mutually exclusive. You can deconstruct some aspects while retaining other parts, the same way something like Ouran High School Host Club can parody shojo romantic comedies while still being a shojo romantic comedy.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I hate the general misuse of the term deconstruction... or I suppose I hate the fact that it's evolved into a term that's hardly related to its original meaning, not unlike platonic love.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
There are a lot of terms that are hardly related to their original meanings. That's the nature of a living language.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, thanks for the info.

Yeah, I honestly have no idea what people mean when they describe a work as a deconstruction because it's used so broadly. :s

Pretty secret. I keep staring at it.

WELL...

To be honest, Madoka feels more like a reconstruction of the magical girl plot, rather than a deconstruction like so many people claim it to be. I mean, it takes tropes and plays them straight, but adds a darker and edgier background to it.
