But Madoka is a deconstruction...?
That's like getting pissy at people calling the sky blue.
What else are we supposed to call it?

I don't think you can call it a deconstruction when it unabashedly and lovingly plays genre tropes straight. It makes the mentor the villain, and it lets characters die when they screw up, but it's still a show about young girls trying to be heroes and fight against evil, and they ultimately find a way to make a difference.

DA

It's not that unique when you compare it to every show ever, but it's a deconstruction within its genre. Main characters dying and and cute mentors being evil are not typical for magical girl shows.

There are plenty of magical girls anime and manga with characters dying and evil mentors. Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne, Sailor Moon, Sugar Sugar Rune, Ojamajo Doremi, Heartcatch Precure...

But main characters dying? Granted, I haven't watched all of the ones you mentioned, but Sailor Moon definitely didn't do that, or make Luna evil.

I don't think those two things are mutually exclusive. You can deconstruct some aspects while retaining other parts, the same way something like Ouran High School Host Club can parody shojo romantic comedies while still being a shojo romantic comedy.
