That's...actually...really weird. What's the rationale for not having a female PC in the English version?

Yeah, I was going to ask that. Maybe it's a translation issue?

Even that would seem odd, given that the earlier games had female PCs.

It also smacks of laziness to me, and it's the kind of laziness that raises eyebrows (I'm thinking, now, of Blizzard making only one face model for female Pandaren toons).

I've been poking around and haven't really found an official answer. It does seem like the english translators were just too lazy to change the script. : / That's pretty lame, considering Nintendo has always been pretty good about that kind of stuff.

I read in a /vp/ thread that gender was taken out from the English version because of a game glitch.

Wish they'd just rewritten the parts so the player will be gender neutral instead of being addressed as 'he' near the end.

Is that true? I didn't know that. Personally, I didn't buy Gates to Infinity because the choice of starter Pokémon was piss-poor and I knew it would never hold a candle to Sky.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
My main problem was the fact you have to manually choose which Pokemon you want to play as. I loved the method of taking a personality quiz in the old ones. It made me feel, idk, special?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. I mean, I always wound up using a guide to get the pokemon I wanted (I always wound up with bulbasaur. Fuck you, I'm not a bulbasaur), but that quiz method had a real charm to it and I was sad to see it go.
I forgot about not being able to be a female character in this game. To the point that reading this secret surprised me. I'm a girl and I've been playing pokemon since the original games, which also lacked a female PC option. I always pretended I was just a butch/boyish/tomboy girl when I played them; I must have done the same with this game as well.

Heh, I started using guides for the same reason -- otherwise I always got freakin' Bulbasaur, every game.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-09 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Awww what's wrong with Bulbasaur? I actually always had to use a guide because that's the pokemon I wanted...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-09 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt, but whenever I got one of the first gen starters I was always disappointed. I would have rather had one of the non-starter starters (skitty, eevee, riolu, etc.) or one of the more recent starters.

A lot of people usually ended up using a guide to get a pokemon they liked, or they just kept redoing the test until they got something they were ok with. Very few, I've heard, went with the first thing they got.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-09 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I took the test wy too seriously and now identify overly much with my starter

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Along the same line, I was put off by the fact there were much less pokemon in the game than the previous ones. I do agree with the secret, that really is a weird thing to leave out of a game that had it in all prior incarnations.

I thought gender was censored in this game entirely?

In the original JP version, there is gender, so most of the female PC issues are the localization team's fault.

Nope - they mostly keep things gender-neutral throughout most of the game, which would be fine if they didn't suddenly throw in male pronouns at the end.

(Caveat, I haven't played this, so the information is second-hand but reliable.)

If it makes you feel better, you're not missing much. I thought it was the weakest of the Mystery Dungeon games by a pretty wide margin. It was way too short and the plot was kinda meh for me, compared to past games. The lack of choice in gender didn't even occur to me until I saw this secret.

As [personal profile] caffeine_buzz said, you're really not missing much. It's a major step down from Explorers of Sky.

That aspect kind of disappointed me, but I still ended up liking the game a lot anyway.

I personally interpreted my character in the game as female but the NPCs kept saying "he" because they didn't know :V Apparently some other people did this too when playing.
