Old wank is a totally different thing from old fandoms. Post about old fandoms all you want, but if you make a comment about something that people have been arguing about for 10 years, people are going to talk about how it's old wank. It's a response to the specific debate, not to the media in general, and it's a good response because at a certain point, when you've been arguing about something for long enough that everyone knows all the points on both sides, what else are you going to say?

Old wank isn't old to everyone, though. It doesn't seem fair that just because it's only new to you, other people will shut you down from even bringing it up for discussion. Don't want to rehash old wank? That's cool. Don't participate in the conversation. But you shouldn't get to shut that conversation down for other people who might want to have it.

Don't know about fandomsecrets, but on Tumblr I know I did. I didn't become a fan until a few months after the sequel came out and I stumbled into a minefield of wank. And people just yelled at me and told me that 20XX called and wanted its wank back.

I mean, I'm sorry for reopening old wounds but goodness is it that big of a deal?

...yeah? Depending on what the wank was and who was involved. I accidentally kick started some old wank by awakening some old trolls (or something like that) and, luckily for me, some other people were willing to engage because I wasn't interested in the trolls shitty opinions on the things I post for fun. But, some other people weren't interested in this old wank at all and ended up breaking from fandom for a while. It kind of sucked. Anyway, the point is, old wank can be a big deal depending on the fandom, the players and the wank.

See, that wouldn't have bothered me so much if it weren't for what happened after…

I apologized and stopped using the tag but they still didn't leave me alone. I would post unrelated things and they would find reasons to attack me for it. I get that people don't want to deal with old wank, but when I tried to move on they wouldn't stop harping on it...

For a few days some of my unrelated posts got reblogged with snide comments attached, but I think people tired themselves out or gave up because I didn't respond.

That's just shitty trolling that reflects more on the stalker trolls than on you. Sorry you have to deal with that! I hope you can shake those assholes eventually. Just ignore them and they should give up eventually.

I don't know. There's no way to tell how many, if any, people might be discouraged from commenting when they see that someone wants the discussion to end. But really, that's kind of beside the point. Why try to stop people talking about something you don't like when it'd be easier to simply not join in?

I've seen plenty of old wank rehashed. There are always people willing to converse, even about shitty, trolling opinions. So, a few people saying "old wank is old" are not shutting down conversation. They are just expressing their lack of desire to comment on old wank,

Exactly. Even old fandoms have new discussions, but then there's "old wank" i.e. things people have whined about since well, possibly before you were born.

I guess to someone who is new to the circle jerk then I can see how they might want to get their opinion in. Even if it's an opinion that's been beaten to death, it's still theirs and new to them. IDK, it's just the nature of the circle jerk beast. There will be people arguing over who shot first for generations to come. Oh well. Just laugh it off and let the noobs have their say.
