Old wank is a totally different thing from old fandoms. Post about old fandoms all you want, but if you make a comment about something that people have been arguing about for 10 years, people are going to talk about how it's old wank. It's a response to the specific debate, not to the media in general, and it's a good response because at a certain point, when you've been arguing about something for long enough that everyone knows all the points on both sides, what else are you going to say?

Old wank isn't old to everyone, though. It doesn't seem fair that just because it's only new to you, other people will shut you down from even bringing it up for discussion. Don't want to rehash old wank? That's cool. Don't participate in the conversation. But you shouldn't get to shut that conversation down for other people who might want to have it.

Exactly. Even old fandoms have new discussions, but then there's "old wank" i.e. things people have whined about since well, possibly before you were born.

I guess to someone who is new to the circle jerk then I can see how they might want to get their opinion in. Even if it's an opinion that's been beaten to death, it's still theirs and new to them. IDK, it's just the nature of the circle jerk beast. There will be people arguing over who shot first for generations to come. Oh well. Just laugh it off and let the noobs have their say.

I don't think people pull out the "so old" mockery for wanks that are chronologically old; it's more for stuff that's old in the sense of being really tired and played out. Like, "This Hetalia wank is so old, didn't we already have like a hundred secrets just like this? What is this, 2008?"

So basically, feel free to go vintage but take care not to tread on worn out territories.

I get the frustration though. There are some opinions and wank people just don't want to see rehashed. It sucks as an old fan seeing shitty old opinions dragged out again, and it sucks as a new fan when you want to have legit discussions with people who've heard it before.

The only thing I wish is that people would be gentler with newbies. I made the mistake of stumbling into wank when I made a shipping post. Got shredded for it. But then people started yelling at me for anything I posted about a particular character even if I wasn't talking about the pairing. Eventually I just ended up not talking about the character much at all.

I just wish people would chill out a bit sometimes.

They should, but to be fair that's prime troll territory. Posting old wank is the easiest way to fuck with people if that's what someone is into. It's possible they were on the defensive. It doesn't excuse it though. Just another perspective.

That I need to restart the old arguments of whether or not Miaka should have chosen Hotohori over Tamahome. And if Heero belongs with Duo or Relena. And was he an emotionless assassin running on autopilot, or was he acting on his own for at least part of the series?

Oh, wow, I haven't thought of Fushigi Yuugi in *years*.

I'm of the opinion that Miaka and Tamahome kind of deserve each other, and Hotohori could do so much better. (12-year-old fangirl me may have at one point started chanting "Die, Miaka, Die" during various points) :-P

Hahaha oh man, I wish Fushigi Yuugi had had different people as the protagonists, then maybe I wouldn't dislike it so much. There's a limit to how much I want to hear about how much Miaka and Tamahome luuuuurve each other. (btw when I was a kid I was rooting for Hotohori because he had better hair)

I'm pretty sure I shipped Miaka with Tasuki, actually. Though in general I just really loved Tasuki and Chichiri. And the Boshi twins.

Still angry that by the end Miaka dropped out of HS to get married. Talk about terrible life choice!

ETA: as for Gundam, I'm one of those people who read the GW fanfiction before watching the show. Then I finally watched it, loved it, but had absolutely no clue how people got from all that politicking to the fandom...

I'm not commenting on the wank thing, because I mostly agree with you (I think most people are actually saying they're tired of hearing about it, but people still have the right to talk about opinions, no matter how played out).

I'm just really enjoying the "1990s" bit. Considering Holmes & Austen fandoms have been around for more than a hundred years before. Not meant to be mean; it's just amusing

In all seriousness, OP, I am sorry if you are getting shut down, a lot. My best suggestion is to try and focus this kind of discussion on other newbies (or even just preface them with an "I don't care if this is old, I wasn't here for it so I'm rehashing it now". Then the older fans can skip past it while newer ones can also join in. :)

True, but it's hard not to be annoyed when you see three new posts a week that basically run along the lines of "hey, am I the only person who hates this character because [ridiculous made-up reason that has been debunked by the fandom three times a week for the past few years]?????"

Like, I don't know. Personally when I'm new in a fandom I look around a bit to see what's going on before I start running around announcing every single thought I've ever had about this piece of media like it's the most original thought EVER.
