This reminds me...

[personal profile] iceyred 2014-07-08 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That I need to restart the old arguments of whether or not Miaka should have chosen Hotohori over Tamahome. And if Heero belongs with Duo or Relena. And was he an emotionless assassin running on autopilot, or was he acting on his own for at least part of the series?

Re: This reminds me...

Oh, wow, I haven't thought of Fushigi Yuugi in *years*.

I'm of the opinion that Miaka and Tamahome kind of deserve each other, and Hotohori could do so much better. (12-year-old fangirl me may have at one point started chanting "Die, Miaka, Die" during various points) :-P

Re: This reminds me...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I didn't hate either Miaka or Tamahome, but they deserved each other. Hotohori/Nuriko all the way.

I always thought that Nuriko's best episode was his/her second-to-last. Before that she/he was just as obnoxious as Miaka.

Hotohori was pretty amazing though.

Ayrt

Hotohori was the best character in that series. No arguments there.

Just seeing you mention Miaka and Hotohori reminds me I'm still cranky over the whole Nuriko/Houki crap. Ugh, Hotohori.

Mind explaining your feelings? Are you cranky that Hotohori get together with Houki?

I don't mind! I might be a bit canonly inaccurate, since I haven't watched it in forever, but:

I hated the way Nuriko's feelings for Hotohori were treated. Like, I didn't expect Hotohori to return them, especially not once he discovered Nuriko was a crossdressing man, rather than a woman, but it always left a terrible, terrible taste in my mouth that after Nuriko dies, Hotohori turns around and marries a woman that looks like Nuriko--had he really been a girl.

It just makes me angry. Poor Nuriko. :/

Oh alright, I get you. It has been a while since I've seen Fushigi Yuugi myself so I'd forgotten that whole mess.

I like Houki, but yeah, that was just terrible. Watase really handled that pretty poorly.

Nuriko was the first time I ever heard of trans-ness being a thing, and even considering that I thought that the explanation of why he was like that was really weird and didn't make a whole lot of sense. I also may or may not have cried many angry tears over his dying just when he was starting to figure out a new identity for himself and never got the chance to fully realize that new identity. (I have so many angry diary entries from when I was 16 about the various deaths from that series...)

Hahaha oh man, I wish Fushigi Yuugi had had different people as the protagonists, then maybe I wouldn't dislike it so much. There's a limit to how much I want to hear about how much Miaka and Tamahome luuuuurve each other. (btw when I was a kid I was rooting for Hotohori because he had better hair)

He did indeed have better hair. And better dialogue than repeatedly shouting his beloved's name.

Miaka!
Tamahome!
Miaka!
Tamahome!
Miaka!
Tamahome!

Every other episode.

DA - I liked Hotohori better because of his hair, too! Hair was such a big factor in my opinions on characters back then...

I'm pretty sure I shipped Miaka with Tasuki, actually. Though in general I just really loved Tasuki and Chichiri. And the Boshi twins.

Still angry that by the end Miaka dropped out of HS to get married. Talk about terrible life choice!

ETA: as for Gundam, I'm one of those people who read the GW fanfiction before watching the show. Then I finally watched it, loved it, but had absolutely no clue how people got from all that politicking to the fandom...

Chichiri was the BESSSST gosh I had such a crush on him when I was 16. And totally with you on the whole dropping out of school to enter into a teenage marriage thing. Wtf kind of a message is that to send -.- On the plus side I've been really enjoying the newer prequel series about Genbu. Takiko is like the anti-Miaka and is one of the best shojo protags I've ever read, and her relationship is WAY the hell more mature and less annoying.

Chichiri was amazing.

I remember Gundam Wing fanfic way more than I remember the actual show. The show was meh. The fanfic was kinky. (The same could be said of the Tenchi Universe).

Re: This reminds me...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-09 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
As much as I lobe Gundam Wing, it did have its issues. I still think it was a pretty decent show though. Gonna disagree about the fanfic being all that kinky though. It was pretty damn bland and fell into boring as seme/uke dynamics more often than not.

Gonna have to disagree about Tenchi as well. Gave the first two OVAs and Universe a rewatch recently. They're still pretty damn fun.

Maybe I'm remembering the fic as being kinkier than it actually was. I was all of fourteen when I discovered the show.

The thing I remember about Tenchi Universe was that Azaka and Kamidake turned into humans and I thought they were much more interesting that way. They and Nagi deserved more screen time.

Re: This reminds me...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-09 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
My apologies if I seemed rude. Gundam Wing is my main fandom and I was just completely baffled by the idea that the fic was kinky. The fic is largely vanilla, unfortunately.

Nagi is absolutely fantastic and I'd kill for a spinoff focusing on her. I ship her and Ryoko so hard.

Re: This reminds me...

[personal profile] iceyred 2014-07-09 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, you're not rude! I was 14, the fic could've mentioned somebody getting tangled in jump rope and I would have been like 'bondage!'

Nagi was great. Intergalactic bounty hunters who look good in bathing suits ftw!

The fandom was full of young people and people who started writing fanfic before watching the series. They just latched onto the pretty boys and didn't pay attention to the politics, the character's personalities, characterizations or development.

Nobody with an ounce of compassion could possibly wish Miaka on Hotohori, lol
