It was influenced by Hamlet, but a rewrite? I'm not sure if you got to the end of Hamlet, but there's a few fairly important changes.

Although I, for one, am glad they kept the bit where Rosencrantz does the hula while using Gildenstern to distract Claudius' troops so that Hamlet can sneak past on his way to reclaim the throne. Which he totally does.

And also the way that nobody dies at the end other than the bad guy. Glad they kept that in.
