I'm up to date on the manga, and while they do share backstory, they aren't a canon ship there either. There's hinting, but nothing solid. I still think people might be jumping the gun in claiming it's canon - I won't believe it until I see real romantic interaction between them.

This is anonymous because I'm sure people would jump at my throat for this.

Well, since you're familiar with the manga and we're already on the topic of canon relationships in it! I do have a question about Ed and Winry. I have heard that Winry admitted she loves Ed at some point in the manga, but I've never heard whether or not Ed responded to her with his own feelings or what they were.

Did he ever, or is this whole claim that Ed/Winry is canon in the manga based entirely on a possibly unrequited love?

Jumping in...

Winry has admitted (to herself) that she loves Ed. Twice actually. However, Ed has not said anything on the matter. So no, Ed/Winry is not canon in the manga... though I believe it will be. Ed's reaction to Winry, and other characters mentioning her, does hint that he think more of her than just his mechanic.

Riza asked him out right if he loves her and he has quite the little freak out. He remembers the incident the next time Winry is fixing his automail and freaks out again, reciting the periodic table in order to take his mind off it. Winry is being used as a hostage to keep Ed and Al under control. He reacts very strongly to threats against her which does seem to indicate that he cares for her. There are many little moments that do seem to show a deepening bond between them (he puts his arm around her and ruffles her hair when she's upset, she give him her earrings for safe keeping, there's more but I'm too lazy to look through my mangas for reference, though I can if you like).

If I was asked right out if Ed/Winry is canon I would say no and it does irk me to see people gloating that it is. However, I do believe it will become canon and it certainly is canon that Winry loves Ed. I'm eagerly awaiting more chapters to clear everything up! :)
