Every country's animation industry has churned out some stinkers. There's a lot of bad American animation and a lot of bad Japanese animation, but there's also many good animated movies/TV shows/shorts/etc. on both sides.

I think that your professor could also do with a little reminding about Tezuka Osamu and how he was influenced by American animation and how those influences spread to the rest of the anime world.

*nods* I agree. I've tried very hard to remind her myself, actually - pointing out the heavy influences of Disney on the style and storytelling - but she refuses to look at it and instead cites things like Hokusai's "manga" sketches as being the primary influence.

I won't deny that Hokusai is the MAN and that he did have an influence on the development and acceptance of manga in Japan (even if he died long before it actually began!) but please. Tekuza wasn't just inspired by woodblock prints and doodlez - he was a giant Disney dork.

(Randomly? A part of me wonders what would have happened if Tekuza had been alive today and played the first Kingdom Hearts game. :o )

I think Tezuka-sensei would have appreciated the Kingdom Hearts game, especially since it uses all the Disney characters in a way similar to his "star system". I also think he would have some very choice words to say to your professor, considering that most people do acknowledge the heavy influence of Disney on anime. Heck, the Japanese Wikipedia acknowledges it too in its article about Japanese manga, saying that Tezuka Osamu's style of manga that was heavily influenced by Disney and other American animators had a de facto impact on post-WWII manga. Your professor sounds like a huge doink.

I wonder what he would think of the 1989~1994 Disney movies, too...The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King...since he died before The Little Mermaid came out...

I wonder if he would have made such a fuss about TLK and Kimba as people over here...

Tezuka-san seems like he was a pretty chill guy, so I think he probably would have just laughed. ^_^

I really need to read more of his work. Particularly Black Jack...
