The whole problem I have with the concept of comment-whoring is that it does nothing to convince me of an author's dedication to their writing. Comments are shiny, wonderful things, and interaction is one of the best parts of fandom, but you can't let that be the the be-all-end-all of your writing experience. On some level, you have to be writing for yourself. You have to be writing because you have so many stories in your head you can't get them down fast enough. You have to be writing because you think they're fantastic and you can't wait to share them. You have to be confident in your writing, you even have to be a little bit arrogant about it. Comments will come as a result of that, but they can't be the goal. Otherwise you are writing exclusively for an audience and your writing loses what makes it unique; it loses you.
