Annnnd, soapbox here I come...

Srsly, manga = Ed/Win; anime = Ed/Al UST

And the only way Elricest could've been any more canon in the movie would be for the two to kiss. I mean, hello Cosplay!Al. Having some co-dependency issues?

Joking aside, I really feel a bit of disappointment in regards to the relationship shift in the manga. I really have nothing against Ed/Win, but I don't think that the way the relationship is evolving is realistic to a group of close friends that grew up so emotionally close to each other. I mean, Ed and Winry are practically brother and sister, especially since Ed and Al lived with Winry after their mother died. So, even though they're not blood related, the relationship seems more along the lines of brother/sister. Now, if Ed/Win fans are all for incest... >D The fact Ed and Al are brothers never stopped me from shipping them

There's also the issues of Ed's relationship with Al and how that coincides with both boys' desire to remove themselves from everyone they know in order to find their paths. With Winry in the picture, she presents a liability (as is clearly seen in the recent chapters of the manga). Before, Ed and Al didn't want Winry to be involved in their battles or to even to go along with them for fear of endangering her. The same held true for many people they knew (ie Hughes, Maria Ross, etc.) Winry even represented a part of their past which they made an effort to destroy (ie burning down their house) and leaving it behind. Putting Winry back into the scheme of things, even as a possible love interest for Ed, seems to turn Ed and Al's goals entirely around. I'm tentative to say it, but it's almost like a lapse in continuity. If anything else, it does seem like an effort on the manga-ka's part to follow along with the trend of "the main character gets the girl," and to me (especially since Al is such a BIG part of Ed's life--hell, the kid gave up an arm to bring him back), that just doesn't fit the story she's been building so far.

Can I just.... Stand next to you on your soap box, nodding occasionally?

Co-dependancy issues, much? As far as I've seen, all they think about is each other, but most people I know that don't support the pairing argue that I'm looking too far into it.
I completely 100% agree. I don't like the romantic turn the story is taking, and maybe that was the plan all along, but it happened so suddenly and randomly - in my opinion - that it almost seems like pushing the pairing on us. There's a huge debate about the concept of 'emotional incest' too, when I've seen discussions (not jus this fandom.) Where, "They were raised together, so it's just like siblings."
I don't think I know anyone else that sees the concept like I do, with the idea of them together (all three), even platonically - but... I'm a bitter Elricest shipper, too I guess? I definitely see the devotion between the brothers more than and before anything else.

Thank you, thank you, thank you- for stating my very same point. In the anime, at least... They haven't seen, talked to, or even written the Rockbells in four years. That's true love, right there.

I've heard on several occasions that Fullmetal Alchemist is not the story of Ed and Al, doing what they need - but a 'coming of age tale' for Ed. Which, if that's the case, then the romance aspect makes sense... but that definition doesn't seem to apply to FMA in the slightest, and if this is supposed to be a coming of age tale, I think they marketed it all wrong. I've never said it, because I'm certain it would get a number of arguments, but I personally see it as a big effort on her part to make something important in Ed's life besides Al. As if she's put so much into their bond that now she's trying to back up and re-direct us.

I hope this comment didn't wind up going... All over the place, and it makes sense.

I think one of the key things that must be remembered in context of the storytelling format of FMA is that the first couple chapters are from Al's point of view, where he essentially tells Rose about their life. It's only later that the POV changes to third-person omniscient(ie a panoramic view of everything occurring within the events of the series). I can see FMA as Ed's coming of age story (like how YGO is about Yuugi's coming of age story, rather than about some card game playing pharaoh who forgot his name...), however since Al is such a big aspect of Ed's life it's very difficult to ignore him (one thing I hate about the fandom: how often Al gets ignored in Ed/someone pairings). Ed was willing to give up life and limb to save his brother, and the only result he got was a suit of armor that could walk around. Even now, his entire pursuit and quest in life is to find a way to restore Al to his original state. That's his only goal in life. That's why he abandoned life with the Rockbells and burned down his home. Basically, he chose Al over Winry.

You could say that as part of Ed's growth and maturity, his relationship with Winry could become blurry as he tries to define how he feels about her (whether as a close friend, sister, or possibly more), but if the series were to continue realistically along the same line it had been with Ed's personality as it is, I think with time he'd push Winry to the side because she'd become a distraction from his original intent. He does the same sort of thing with Rose, who presents herself as a possible love interest in the beginning of the series (and again in the anime). That's the main issue I have with Ed/Win. Winry has feelings for Ed, for sure, but whether those feelings are returned on anything more than a platonic level is debatable. And I'm on the side that believes that he either might for the time being and move on or doesn't actually love Winry in anything more than a brotherly manner.

And that leaves Al again, whom Ed very much cares about. It's obvious during recent chapters that Ed feels Al doesn't necessarily need his help as much as Al might've in the past (Ed even mentions at one point that Al always beat him in sparring matches, even when they were children--see icon), but that doesn't mean his affection for Al is any less than it was in the beginning of the series. They are very close, and like I mentioned before, Ed was willing to give up life and limb for Al. That's not something just anyone would do. That, added to Al's desperate desire to help Ed in return for saving his life and you've got one relationship where the two are dependent on each other, at least emotionally. Not likely to be tossed aside for the sake of a childhood friend, one would hope.

I do read RoyxEd, and that is one of the first things I look for, in good fic. If Ed and Al still have a bond despite romantic interest in someone else, I have a much higher tolerance.
I really really do have a hard time seeing them with anyone else, though. I just don't think they can have a healthy relationship with someone else, considering how dependant they are on each other - and that if a healthy relationship with someone else did start (i.e. EdxWin.) then the Elric's bond would fade.

That's why he abandoned life with the Rockbells and burned down his home. Basically, he chose Al over Winry.

All I have to say to this, is again- thank you. I've tried to point this out on several occasions, but very few people are actually willing to listen to it. As I'm sure I've said already, the only people that really want to hear points supporting the theory, already support it, themselves.

My biggest issue with EdxWin, especially the concept of it being canon is that (even though I'm not completely caught up on the manga.) I haven't seen anything that insinuates their affection for each other is anything but platonic. The word 'love' is used on more than one occasion, like Winry expressing that she cares for Ed, but I don't recall Ed ever saying anything close to that, himself.
I, personally, believe if you're going to be close to someone (especially in a situation where you have to save their life) you're going to have to love them. I don't know when loving your best friend suddenly became taboo, because love = romantic interest to so many people, lately.
I personally don't think he would love her in anyway but a brotherly manner, and I'm worried that the romantic possibility that gets brought up is going to cheapen the rest of the story, and shift Al out of the main focus of the story.
