Really, it's not always about becoming a better writer by writing fic after fic after fic after fic. Not in the beginning, anyway, because some people simply want to test the waters of fanfiction writing without having to go through the process that it takes to become a professional writer. And if they don't get some sort of notice, it tends to upset them. I'm not saying this is a good way to think, but it tends to be a common factor in most people period, the need for some sort of approval. A person who doesn't get so much as one comment of critique probably won't be too thrilled to try again, even to get better.

Of course, like you, I don't feel the need to baby writers by helping them become good every step of the way. But a lot of new fanfic writers tend to do the same way about the whole situation whether anyone likes it or not.
