Pretty much. I mean, we could try to dissect the exact details of precisely what category of homophobe you are, but...

I thought I had homophobic tendencies until I met some POC gay folks at school. It turns out that what I thought was homophobia was just an inability to stand self-impressed American white boys that go around telling immigrants how they should be living, and not even attempting to understand the immigrants' point of view (and I'm not talking about views on gay issues, but the community it general. My old neighborhood was split even between ethnic and gay. It's mostly gay now.) Those white boys just happened to be gay.

Then that sounds like you're an assholeist - you're prejudiced against assholes.

when you genuinely believe that queers are different than other people in any other way than their sexuality.

If you answered yes to both, you're not homophobic. If you answered yes to the first, but no to the second, you might be slightly homophobic.

but seriously, as long as you're not actively working to take away gay peoples' rights, you have some time for self-reflection, which is really the only way to figure things out.

I don't find it very useful to define people that way. I prefer to look at specific actions and beliefs. Are you looking at gay people as individuals or do you look at each person as a representative of the group and make assumptions based on that? That's really the main thing in my mind. If not, work on that. If you're using gay slurs, stop doing that. Don't worry about if you're a homophobic person or not and how that makes you terrible or not, just stop doing things that people point out as homophobic behaviors without getting caught up on guilt or being defensive and what it says about you.

Do gay people around you often seem uncomfortable when you talk? Have any of them pointed out that you might be homophobic, or that something you said was homophobic?

Do you hate gay people? Do you secretly think it's gross? Do you think gay marriage isn't necessary or less valuable than straight marriage? Do you think gay people shouldn't raise kids? Would you be more uncomfortable with a gay friend hugging you than a gay friend?

Also, why are you asking? Usually there's a reason.

Everybody's using joke responses or really obvious responses, but I think the answer to this question is more complicated than that. You don't have to be a raging jackass about gay people to be homophobic. So, on that subject: do you believe being gay is a choice? Do you believe anyone who is gay is a risk to children? Do you believe same-sex sex is inherently gross? Do gay people who act like commonly known gay stereotypes make you feel scorn? Do you not believe in same-sex marriage?

There are a lot of questions we can ask about this, some worse than others, but you'll only figure out if you're homophobic by thinking about it on your own terms.

My response definitely wasn't a joke. In fact the only joke answer I see is cloud_riven's (and it was a good joke)
