Place the cotton swab from the end of a Q-Tip soaked in the stuff on the gum DIRECTLY under the affected tooth (this WILL kill the nerve, so make sure you don't get it on any other tooth). This should kill the nerve, which will kill the pain, unless it's infected.
Other than that, you're looking at a root canal, I'm sorry to say. Just make sure you get a good dentist, and if they try to sell you more than one, find somebody else. That's the main procedure from which they make their money. (Talk to the dentist BEFORE they have you in the chair and frozen; they often don't charge for a consultation, if you have no insurance).
