Stress induced toothache?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-10 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yesterday I asked about having a toothache and no insurance. I have not made a dentist's appointment yet (looking for one). But I am wondering if it could be stressed induced fake pain? It stops hurting as soon as I get occupied with something else. It does not hurt when I tap it (even with metal) and it is no more sensitive than usual. Also, sometimes it stops hurting and other teeth hurt (like ones on the other side).

Now, my week has been stressful (and only getting moreso). I was the person whose mother guilted me into helping her pay for my family to visit ($500). Then I got a medical bill for $200 a couple days later.

Now this is happending and I have been sort of stressed over my teeth for a while (i was able to go to dentist 2 months~ ago). And I know I need some work but have been saving up money to go (which is now gone bcuz of all this).

So could this be in my head? I know I have some sinus headache symptoms, so I don't know if I had pain from that, thought it was my tooth, and started obsessing over it and now I think it hurts. How long can I safely wait to see if that is the problem?

i'm not going to give any advice, but maybe it's not your teeth but your gums? i had horrible pain in a tooth every once in a while and it drove me nuts, but when my dentist tested it, it was perfectly fine, just my gums around the tooth inflamed or something.

My gums seem to be fine from what I can see. no inflammation or anything (dont bleed when I floss, etc.)

If stress makes you grind your teeth at night, or clamp your jaw hard at nights, then that will make your jaw hurt. I've had that, with my jaw, cheek muscles, eyesockets and sinuses all tender because of it.

The pain is referring (spreading out to other teeth) because the nerve in your tooth is dying. It goes away when you are distracted because your brain is a wonderful thing that is feeding you all kinds of opioids, but not enough to take the pain away completely.

Get clove oil from the pharmacy. Place the cotton swab from the end of a Q-Tip soaked in the stuff on the gum DIRECTLY under the affected tooth (this WILL kill the nerve, so make sure you don't get it on any other tooth). This should kill the nerve, which will kill the pain, unless it's infected.

Other than that, you're looking at a root canal, I'm sorry to say. Just make sure you get a good dentist, and if they try to sell you more than one, find somebody else. That's the main procedure from which they make their money. (Talk to the dentist BEFORE they have you in the chair and frozen; they often don't charge for a consultation, if you have no insurance).

If it comes down to a root canal, ill just have him jerk the tooth out. no way can afford 1k for something that might eventually have to be pulled anways.

and yeah, not insurance

I'd reccomend going to the doctor anyway, asap. It could be stress, stress does some REALLY weird things to me, but I wouldn't count on it. It could be serious. Also, there is NO WAY someone can diagnose you over the internet, no matter how descriptive you are.

I have had a similar thing... sorta. Basicly, I got symptoms that made my doctor suspect I had a stroke, but these symptoms would go away when I played games. A lot of tests showed that it's unlikely that I did have one, but she wanted me to keep an eye on my symptoms, be ready to come in any day, and make a cup of tea once an hour as a sort of de-stress ritual. It helped.

well, you can check for absess/inflamation by pressing down on the tooth very hard with your finger, then quickly letting go. You'll have a sharp pain if there's an absess.
Maybe you need something to obssess about atm, and looking for a free dentist will be usefull anyway.

I live in a big city and everything is 2 hours away at the peak hours. 1h at any other time.

btw, ^ is the method my dentist checked a tooth with an on/off pain.

It CAN be, yes, but if it persists after a few weeks it's probably just a cavity.

I bet you have a sinus infection.

I had my first sinus infection this spring semester and mainly it felt like horrific tooth pain. Like I wanted to pull all my teeth out they hurt so bad.

I had sinus problems for 20-some years of my life and I'm going to agree with this. If it's a top tooth that's hurting and it's not sensitive to things like temperature, chances are it's a sinus issue.

One time I was sure I had a cavity because this one tooth was hurting. I went to the dentist and he asked if I'd been stressed lately. I was like "Actually, yeah...." It turned out I had been grinding my teeth too much. No cavity.

Still you should probably get a more professional opinion.
