Man, all I do see days is dark and twisted. I've gotten a rep. Even though my endings are 90% happy, the journey is always riddled with really twisted sex.

I'm forcing myself to write something fluffy, even though I'm positive my publisher will just shake its collective head and send it back to me until I add in some sex at gunpoint or something.

What can you do? You write what you write.

Any reason why?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes sense? I mean, it strikes me as strange that you'd write something you don't want to read ever, but fluff is by fareasier to write than other fic. I've written a couple fluff fics just to scratch the writing itch, though I still enjoy reading them on occasion.

"fluff is by fareasier to write than other fic"

I don't think that's true. If anything it varies from person to person.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it varies, but fluff doesn't really have to be long or require a plot or character arcs. It's the simplest genre.

It might vary a little, but writing fluff means not having to pay quite as close attention to things like plot and characterization, because readers are very forgiving as long as you don't forget the fluff. A lot of people would find that easier.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, the only thing I cannot write is fluff.

Same. I don't think I've ever written fluff.

Wait, do people re-read their own fics after writing/editing? Why? You would already know everything that happens.

Sometimes people like their own writing.

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2014-07-12 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I do. I reread all my fics on AO3 like a month ago to remind myself that I don't suck as much as I think I do. (I was reading a fic that was poorly and annoyingly written and I thought seemed similar to my writing and I got nervous. It wasn't anything like my writing, I found, after reading my fics.) There's one I wrote that cracks me the fuck up so I reread it like once a week, I swear.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
If knowing what happens stopped me from rereading things, I would not have books stacked on virtually every flat surface in my room.

I'm an avid re-reader/watcher. It doesn't matter that I know what will happen - surprise is not the main reason why I enjoy something.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
You only watch or read things once? Ever?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. The fics I write are some of my favorite fics in every fandom I've written in.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I re-read mine on occasion, usually when I'm in the mood for a particular trope and run across my fic in the character!whump list.

Also, my memory is terrible and I don't really remember my own fics that well. After more than 70 fics in the same fandom - I've mostly forgotten what happens in the early ones or the ones I wrote in less than 24 hours for a challenges or communities. It's fun to rediscover a fic I've forgotten.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes, if you take a hiatus from writing, rereading can help refresh the story in your head and help you remember where you wanted to go.

I often read/watch things I've read/watched before because I enjoy them - and given that I often write what I enjoy, that means re-reading my own writing.

Up until a few years ago, I also liked to read the comments on my stuff as a pick-me-up, but that pretty much ended when anti-concrit culture became the norm in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
Because I write fic to fill holes in my fandom reading that I haven't been able to find anywhere else.

Besides, it helps me remember my writing "voice" if I've been spending too much time betaing for others. I start picking up their writing quirks, and sometimes it clashes.. dreadfully. So going back and reading my finished work helps me get back on track.

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-07-12 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly can't read my old "dark and twisted" stuff because it's too embarrassing. I had a stage of "writing dark stuff to prove how mature I was" and I sorely regret it. Also I wrote some weird ass fucked up shit.

On the bright side it taught me how to use dark stuff responsibly and with care, respect and research.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, when I was young, I was afraid of that stage, and afraid that any kind of angst I could attempt to create would fall short. I ended up pigeonholing myself into creating only fluff and "humorous" stuff for a long time. I'm still not over the fear of embarrassment. So, I think you're better off for having that stage, really... you can't get good without practice.

I'm a bit like this.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-07-12 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I got a reputation for smut in my last fandom, and I do enjoy writing it. But with a few exceptions, reading smut generally bores me. Those exceptions are basically very, very particular kinks, or sex scenes which have actual plot or character development to a broader story. Otherwise, I don't read PWPs and I skip over sex scenes in long stories.

Also, I spent five minutes staring at that doodle before realizing it was a flower vs handcuffs...around a stripper pole? IDK.

Re: I'm a bit like this.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's handcuffs with a random glitched line

We could do a fic exchange!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
I could write dark, twisted, cynical, chop-off-your-lover's-head crap for you (Seems easy enough to write, but I DO NOT WANT TO READ IT) and you could write me fluff.

Y'know, if I came off anon.

And if I wrote fic for some reason.
