I feel really conflicted about Tom Cruise. I actually love a lot of his movies and a lot of the time he seems like a genuinely nice guy with a lot of great energy. But I have to admit that the whole scientology thing really makes me see him differently (same goes for people I otherwise like such as Will Smith. Ever since that mess with the school, it's hard to see him the same way as well). I guess that's the cost of finding out that celebrities are flawed and have dumb beliefs the same way everyone else does

I mean, there are worse things than a crazy religion.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
na

There certainly are worse things but I still find some of their beliefs especially distasteful, particularly the fact that some of their core beliefs involve rejecting psychiatry as a whole and believing that mental illness is just a "label" created by society. Hubbard himself suggested that people instead should be evaluated on the "tone scale" and those lower on the scale (people who probably show signs of actual mental illness) should be quarantined. Not sure if that belief has carried into modern day scientology but I wouldn't be shocked

It's not like the other religions aren't crazy and problematic.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really? Cults are terrifying.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe. But crazy religions do real harm to people, and Scientology is no exception.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
I care less about their crazy beliefs, and care a lot more about their methods of harassment - see "fair game" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_Game_%28Scientology%29) - to silence and discredit former members.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. There's the things people do in the name of crazy religions.

TYVM for the links. I only read about the school on WhyWeProtest when Anonymous was trying to get it shut down. The only good thing that can be said about it is that it's shuttered. One of the documentaries was rerun here a while back, and the chief apostle/whatever actually tried to justify child labour. Yeah, no, shut up now, please.
