[Edge of Tomorrow/Tom Cruise]

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree completely, OP, though I haven't seen Edge of Tomorrow yet. I just really like Tom Cruise and think he's done some excellent work. "Minority Report" is one of my all-time favorite films.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. SMH. SMH. The novella it wasn't based on was nine billion times better.

I love that movie too!! I can't remember a Tom Cruise movie I've seen that I didn't enjoy.

I feel really conflicted about Tom Cruise. I actually love a lot of his movies and a lot of the time he seems like a genuinely nice guy with a lot of great energy. But I have to admit that the whole scientology thing really makes me see him differently (same goes for people I otherwise like such as Will Smith. Ever since that mess with the school, it's hard to see him the same way as well). I guess that's the cost of finding out that celebrities are flawed and have dumb beliefs the same way everyone else does

I like Tom Cruise too! He is one of my favorite actors. I can't think of a role that I hated him (that did not pertain to a terrible movie plot). I particularly love World of the Wars, Minority Report, Collateral and Valkyrie. And those movies need more love.

Anon from above

(shhhhhhhh. you're evidently a terrible person if you like the movie minority report.)

LOL! I think that you mean War of the Worlds (but World of the Wars is a really cute mixup). I liked that film up until the point where he came out of the basement and turned into Tom Cruise Action Hero (TM). Up to then, the film had been really good at depicting a sort of everyman perspective of what events like that might actually be like.

After that, it turned into one-man action hero, and led into a completely unrealistic ending (not the germs, the untouched street with people still living in their houses, not evacuated and completely easy to find). I'd enjoyed the start of the film, but ended up disappointed.

[personal profile] peablossom 2014-07-11 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a great movie (disregarding my dislike for the ending) but Cruise is never going to be my fav. And that's probably fine with him, since he is super, super, mega rich, and all, and I gave him my money in any case.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-07-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Aside from Legend, I dunno if there's any of his movies that I truly love -- but I've never understood the widespread hate that the guy gets. I remember when he was on one of the V6 variety shows, he came off as a genuinely funny and down-to-earth guy. Plus, I really liked that he was so determined to use real planes in Valkyrie!

I don't hate him, but there's something about him when he's just being himself that makes my mind scream "FAKE!"

Problem is, a lot of people see Scientology as more of a cult or pyramid scheme than a religion.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
And, well, there's reasons for that.

But there are other Scientologists that don't get the flack that he does, so I'm going to point you toward the couch-jumping on Oprah, the 'glib' thing with Matt Lauer with the weird denials of postpartum depression existing, and the fact that he's much more outspoken about Scientology than most.

That was a very good movie, and he was good in it, but, oh, that ending.

Cruise is an ass. He's controlling. He's not just a scientologist, he's a real jerk about it. The way he tells off people for taking psychological drugs (and in particular women with postpartum depression) completely turned me off him.

That being said, the movie is really good. It actually helped for me that the character started off as a jerk. By the time the movie really gets going, you actually root for him.

He's a scientologist. He hates gay people, mental health, and likes pedestry.

He's my best friend's favorite actor, and I do like him as actor a lot. I think he makes films that are entertaining. I think he aims for films that are meant to be entertaining for people to watch and I think he succeeds at that. However, I do understand people's general problem with him as a Scientologist because I do too. But at the same time, it's like, why should his private life be any of our business. I dunno....confusing.

I'm always conflicted about his movies, they're usually stuff I love, but then I remember him mansplaining about how women don't actually get PPD and I want to stuff him into a rocket and send him on a one-way trip to meet Xenu.

I'm still able to enjoy most of his movies, but I can't see him the same way anymore. And it's not even the religion itself. There are several other actors who happen to be Scientologists and I don't think they're weird or off-putting because they haven't done anything weird or off-putting like Tom Cruise did.

Mostly agreed, OP. (I can't think offhand how many of his movies I've enjoyed so I'm not sure I can say "a lot" for myself, but definitely some.) And I haven't seen Edge of Tomorrow, but my mother did and all she could talk about was how much she loved seeing Tom's character die over and over.

I'll never be Tom's biggest fan, but I don't hate him either, so I feel like those kinds of attitudes from people are a bit much.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I want to hate Tom Cruise but then I remember that Top Gun is unironically one of my favorite movies ever and I just can't

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I've always hated Tom Cruise long before he was outed/outed himself as a crazy nutbar.

Since I do not know him personally, I guess his PR team is to blame for crafting him a very nasty public persona: the price of fame badly handled.

Some actors are constantly derided with a lot less cause and are never later revealed to the public eye as mad as hatters; and each and every time they are mentioned here, half the responses will dump undeserved contempt with no hesitation and not half as much cause.

Tom Cruise is a blot on the Hollywood landscape and a aging parasite preventing other younger, better, more deserving actors to get their chance in big budget movies. I wish he would go away and never come back so we would get a chance to enjoy more movies without his creepy presence.

PS: don't tell me he is kind to animal and brings his aged grandmother apples every month: I don't care about his personal life which is just that, personal: I am referring to his public persona, which we see far too much of in the entertainment media.

I think he's (probably) a very charming, charismatic and highly professional actor - but absolute hell to live with on a daily basis.

Since I don't have to do the latter, I can enjoy the persona of the former.
